Saints trying to put a stop to three-game skid, slow starts

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints’ first three game-skid since 2016 has cast doubt on their prospects for what once looked like a promising season.

When they rallied to beat Tampa Bay on Oct. 31 in a game marred by starting quarterback Jameis Winston’s season-ending knee injury, the Saints were on a three-game winning streak. They were on the cusp of moving into a first-place tie with the Buccaneers in the NFC South — if New Orleans could beat Atlanta the following week.

Eason propels LSU to 85-46 victory over McNeese

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Sophomore Tari Eason came off the bench to score 19 points and grab a career-high 14 rebounds and LSU breezed to an 85-46 victory over McNeese State in nonconference action Thursday night.

Eason sank 8 of 13 shots from the floor and blocked three shots, notching his third double-double of the season for the Tigers (4-0). Darius Days finished with 14 points and 10 boards for his first doubledouble after posting eight of them last season. Sophomore reserve Eric Gaines pitched in with 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Saints without Kamara, both offensive tackles vs. Eagles

METAIRIE (AP) — Saints running back Alvin Kamara will miss his second straight game Sunday in Philadelphia, and New Orleans also will be without starting tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk.

In addition to listing those three prominent players as out on Friday’s injury report, the Saints also made a change at kicker. New Orleans waived rookie Brian Johnson, who missed two extra point kicks in last week’s 23-21 loss at Tennessee, and elevated recently resigned kicker Brett Maher from the practice squad to the active roster.

Hounds fall valiantly to No.3 General Trass, 40-20

WELSH – The No. 19 Welsh Greyhounds squared off with a juggernaut in No. 3 General Trass at Greyhound Stadium Friday night in a Regional Round showdown in the Class 2A state playoffs. The Hounds gave the undefeated Panthers everything they wanted, but a slew of big plays allowed General Trass to advance to the quarterfinal round where they will host the Amite Warriors. The Greyhounds end their terrific season with a mark of 7-5, a year after winning only one contest in 2020.

WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds will host a regional round of the class 2-A non-select playoffs here Friday night after their win over South Plaquemines last Friday night. The win over the number 14 Hurricanes sets up a meeting with number three General Trass, who is 10-0 for the season.

Lady Dogs knock off defending 4A state champion in opener

The Jennings Lady Bulldogs opened their 2021-22 season with a bang at Gaudet Gymnasium Tuesday night by taking down the defending 4A state champion LaGrange Gators by a final of 53-48. The Lady Dogs used big nights from Anna Trahan and Bri Doucet, who combined for 32 points in the huge win.

Cards, Lady Cards earn weep over Merryville

LACASINE – The Lacassine Cardinals and Lady Cards earned a clean sweep over Merryville at John Juneau Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Lady Cards grabbed a 63-51 win over perennial Class A power Merryville, while the Cards blew past the Panthers by a final of 79-55.

Lady Tigers dominate East Beau, 70-33

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers picked up right where they picked up from their championship run in 2021 by blowing out the East Beauregard Lady Trojans by a final of 70-33 at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium Tuesday night. Lake Arthur placed three players in double figures, and nailed nine 3-balls in the lopsided win.

Verlander gets $25M from Astros, Belt remains with Giants

NEW YORK (AP) — Justin Verlander reached a $25 million deal to remain with the Houston Astros as he comes back from Tommy John surgery, and Brandon Belt accepted an $18.4 million qualifying offer from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Cox Named Soccer Challenge Champion

Hud Cox, 11, was recently named champion at the state-level Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge with a score of 210, the second highest in the entire competition. Hud is the son of Wayne and Brandi Cox, of Jennings.
