Hounds storm past Hurricanes in first round, 23-12

PORT SULPHUR — The Welsh Greyhounds used a strong running attack to blow past the South Plaquemines Hurricanes in the bi-district round of the non-select class 2-A playoffs Friday night. Welsh will now host a General Trass team in the regional round at Greyhound Stadium Friday night.

Beckham, Miller to make Rams debuts vs. 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. and Von Miller are active and will make their debuts for the Los Angeles Rams for their game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Beckham was signed last week and Miller was acquired two weeks ago in a trade from Denver.

Both will play Monday night against the Niners with Beckham helping replace injured receiver Robert Woods.

Woods is inactive after going down with a seasonending knee injury in practice last week.

St. Michael edges out Lady Dogs in volleyball Division III Quarterfinals

LAFAYETTE — Iota’s first trip to the State Volleyball tournament since 2016 came to an abrupt halt Thursday with a straight-sets loss to No. 4 St. Michael in a Division III quarterfinal contest at the Cajundome.

The fifth-seeded Lady Dogs, who have advanced to the state tournament quarterfinal round eight times since 2002, ended their season with a record of 23-19.

“Our team was pretty awesome this season,” said Iota coach Meredith Hebert. “We worked together well. Some games didn’t fall in our favor, but for the most part, we were all pretty sound.”

BRUSLY – The old adage of “defense wins championships” was put to the test Friday and the Iota Bulldogs rose to the occasion.

After giving up 74 yards and a touchdown on just four plays late in the first quarter, the Bulldogs’ defensive unit limited the No. 14-seeded Panthers to just five first downs and 61 yards the rest of the night in a thrilling 17-7 upset victory.

The victory earned the No. 19-seeded Bulldogs a home game this week when they will entertain No. 3 St. Martinville at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Bulldogs fall to Bogalusa 58-26

BOGALUSA — The Jennings Bulldogs took a trek across Louisiana Friday night and fell to a very talented Bogalusa Lumberjack football team by a final of 58-26. The Dogs end their season with a record of 4-7. Bogalusa advances to play Lutcher in the Regional Round.

The Dogs got things started in what was a shootout early. Trevor Etienne took a Bogalusa punt and rambled 65 yards to the house to give the Dogs a 6-0 lead.

The Jacks answered right back when quarterback Ashton Levi ran it in from nine yards out to go up 8-6.

The No. 19 Welsh Greyhounds knocked off the No. 14 South Plaquemines Hurricanes by a final of 23-13. The Hounds advance to play General Trass at home next Friday.

Iota Knocks Off Panthers 17-7

The Iota Bulldogs went on the road and knocked off the Brusly Panthers by a final of 17-7. The Dogs will host St. Martinville next Friday night.
