BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s basketball team posted two second-half, eight-point runs to rally to defeat a stubborn South Carolina team, 85-80, Saturday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Tigers are now winners of four straight games, including the first two games of this threegame homestand, to move to 10-2 and 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference. South Carolina, playing for the first time since Jan. 6, falls to 3-3 and 1-1 in the league.

Saints’ Brees exits playoffs, perhaps career, on sour note

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Nearly two hours after the New Orleans Saints’ season had ended, Drew Brees stood on the Superdome field in street clothes, throwing passes to his children while his wife, Brittany, captured images of those moments with her cell phone.

Brees routinely throws the ball around with his kids after home games, but after a 30-20 playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night, he lingered longer than usual — and there was no telling whether that familiar postgame scene would play out again.

Louisiana-Lafayette defeats Texas-Arlington 68-51

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mylik Wilson had a seasonhigh 25 points plus 16 rebounds as Louisiana-Lafayette beat Texas-Arlington 68-51 on Saturday.

Cedric Russell had 16 points for Louisiana-Lafayette (9-4, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference). Dou Gueye added 10 rebounds. Theo Akwuba had nine rebounds.

The Mavericks’ 26.5 field goal percentage represented the worst mark by a Louisiana-Lafayette opponent this season. Texas-Arlington totaled 25 points in the second half, a season low for the team.

Christon leads Grambling St. over Texas Southern 78-72

HOUSTON (AP) — Cameron Christon had 18 points and six rebounds as Grambling State got past Texas Southern 78-72 on Saturday night.

Sarion McGee had 16 points for Grambling State (5-6, 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Peyton Taylor added 11 points. Kelton Edwards had 10 points.

Galen Alexander had 17 points for Texas Southern (2-7, 0-2), which has now lost four consecutive games. John Walker III added 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Justin Hopkins had 11 points.

Powerful LCA topples Welsh 56-24 to open league play

WELSH - The Welsh Greyhounds opened district 6-2A play having to deal with one of the top programs in 2A right off the bat. Coming off a state football title just weeks ago, the Lafayette Christian Knights (LCA) picked up where they left off on the hardwood. The Knights opened 6-2A play with a 56-24 win over the Greyhounds at Greyhound Gymnasium.

Dogs run past Lake Arthur 80-37

The Jennings Bulldogs picked up a big victory over the Lake Arthur Tigers here Tuesday night at Gaudet Gymnasium, blasting the Tigers by a final of 80-37. The dogs placed 11 players in the scoring column, and moved to 5-3 with the non-district win over the Tigers. The Dogs will take tonight off before heading into district 4-3A play next week, while the Tigers will travel to Lafayette to take on the mighty LCA Knights. Trevor Etienne had the hot-hand for the Bulldogs Tuesday night, as he poured in 18 to lead his squad, a day before he learned of being named to the All-Louisiana First Team Football squad, a team that ranks the best players in all classifications throughout the state.
