Strong second half propels ESA over Cardinals 55-44

LACASSINE – The Lacassine Cardinals had a three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night when they opened district 6-B play against the Episcopal School of Acadiana (ESA) at Juneau Gymnasium Tuesday night. The Falcons rallied after a slow start to claim a 55-44 win over the Cardinals despite trailing the homestanding squad 27-22 at the halftime break. ESA’s Adam Sabbaghian scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to help push the Falcons past Lacassine in both teams’ league opener.

No. 3 Indians take down Hamilton Christian 55-50

ELTON - The Elton Indians accomplished something they haven’t done in a number of yearsknock off the Class A power Hamilton Christian Warriors Tuesday night at Oris Guidry Gymnasium. The No. 3 Indians topped Hamilton by a final of 55-50 to move to 12-3 overall, while the Warriors fell to 10-5 overall. In the opener, the Lady Indians rolled to their third straight win by besting the Lady Warriors 66-32 in a blowout win. Vici Woods and Mariah Lemoine had big nights for Elton, both racking up over 20 points in the win.

OXFORD, Miss. – The LSU men’s basketball team led for 39:36 seconds in a dominating road win performance Saturday night over the Ole Miss Rebels, 75-61.

LSU is now 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference as LSU won for the third straight year in The Pavilion Ole Miss falls to 6-4 and 1-2 in the league.

Brady vs. Brees: A matchup for the ages and aged

(AP) - The NFL has never seen a playoff matchup quite like the upcoming one between Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Drew Brees’ New Orleans Saints.

A pair of quarterbacks in their 40s still thriving on the playoff stage at an age when nearly every other great passer in NFL history was already enjoying retirement.

Brees will take the field for the Saints on Sunday two days after turning 42 as the young gun in this matchup against the 43-year-old Brady, who has shattered nearly every record for longevity in the NFL.

Christon lifts Grambling past Alcorn St. 79-74

GRAMBLING, La. (AP) — Cameron Christon tied his career high with 24 points as Grambling narrowly defeated Alcorn State 79-74 on Tuesday night.

Terreon Randolph had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Grambling (4-6, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Reyhan Cobb added 10 points and eight rebounds. Trevell Cunningham distributed 11 of Grambling’s seasonhigh 20 assists.

Grambling State scored a season-high 44 points after intermission.

Kurk Lee had 20 points and six assists for the Braves (0-6, 0-1). Troymain Crosby added 18 points and Tyree Corbett 15.

North Carolina plays 1,000th ACC game, beats Syracuse 81-75

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Garrison Brooks and Armando Bacot each had a double-double, and North Carolina pulled away in the last three minutes to beat Syracuse 81-75 on Tuesday night.

The Tar Heels (8-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) became the first men’s basketball program to play 1,000 regular-season ACC games. The Tar Heels are 708-292 and have the most wins in ACC history.

Brooks scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds. Bacot had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Bacot has 14 doubledoubles and 19 games with 10 or more rebounds. R.J. Davis added 12 points.

HOUNDS FALL TO LCCP 78-62

WELSH – The Welsh Greyhounds did battle with a tough Lake Charles College Prep (LCCP) team Monday night at Greyhound Gymnasium, but came up on the short side by a count of 78-62. Will Green had a superb night for the Hounds in the defeat, draining 20 points in the contest.

Lacassine takes two wins over visiting Reeves

LACASSINE – The Lacassine Cardinals and Lady Cardinals continued to roll by defeating the Reeves Raiders and Lady Raiders in a pair of non-district games at John Juneau Gymnasium. The Cardinals topped the Raiders by a final of 58-30, while the Lady Cardinals handled the Lady Raiders by a final of 54-50.

The Hathaway Hornets and Lady Hornets came into Gaudet Gymnasium at Jennings High School Friday night and swept a pair of contests from their Jeff Davis Parish rivals. The No. 2-ranked Hornets defeated the Bulldogs by a final of 57-39, while the No.1-ranked Lady Hornets toppled the Lady Dogs by a count of 63-43. The Lady Hornets improved their overall record to 15-3 overall, while the 3A No.5-ranked Lady Dogs fell to 14-3.

The Hornets upped their overall mark to an identical 15-3 slate, while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-3.
