Fred M. Smith made Lieutenant in Naval Air Corps

1942 - Fred Mims Smith, son of Dr. and Mrs. Morgan Smith, has recently been promoted to a Lieutenant in the Naval ‘‘Air Corps, at Charleston South Carolina. Lt. Smith completed his Air Corps, training at Jacksonville, Fl and upon completion of his training was made an instructor.

TAKE LONGER STEPS TO SAVE SHOE LEATHER

1916, Wholesale price on men’s and women’s footwear have been advanced 50 to 75 cents a pair within the last seventy two hours and certain lines have been withdrawn entirely from the market owing to a shortage in leather, according to an announcement by officers of the Pennsylvania Shoe Travelers association. Many letters were read from firms announcing an advance of 37 to 60 cents a pair on upper stock and 8 to 10 cents a pound on sole leather.

LUCAS IRON WORKS CONSUMED BY FIRE!!!!

1916 - This morning at eight o’clock fire was discovered in the Lucas Iron Works building, North Market Street. Smoke was seen pouring from the building. The alarm was given promptly but before assistance could arrive almost the entire building was in flames. The rapid spread of the blaze to all parts of the building is attributed to the fact that the contents, consisting largely of motor power machinery, which was on hand for repair, contained considerable oil of various kinds, which caused quick combustion.

INSPECTION and FIRE PREVENTION DAY IN JENNINGS

1916 - In recent years, Jennings officials have observed Fire Prevention Day by making an inspection of the property and permises within the corporate limits. It is their intention to do so agian this year, on Monday, Oct. 9th His Excellency, Governor R. Pleasant, has by proclamation, designated October 9th as “Fire and Accident Prevention Day” In Louisiana. Your attention is called to importance and the imperative need of the proper obersavance of Fire Prevention Day.
