Zigler planes to ‘force rain’ by dropping ice on clouds

Zigler Flying Service is all set to "make it rain" as soon as the necessary towering cumulous clouds appear. When you see such a towering cloud overhead, look for the circus.

George Houston, manager of the Zigler Flying Service, says between 40 and 50 pounds of dry ice is safely stored at the field and that Jeff Hooper, pilot, will have a plane ready to take the ice aloft and blast the cloud and force a rain.

"There is no guess work about it," said Mr. Houston. All we need is the necessary cumulous cloud of the towering variety and we won't let it go by."

Northside teacher prizes LBJ letter

Jeanette Jackson is a teacher with empathy. She has wondered how to get through to the poor who think life offers nothing.

So she did something about it.

She wrote letters.

She wrote letters to important and prominent people who have been poor and hopeless at some time in their lives.

She has received answers from Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglass, another letter from radio television personality Joe Garagiola, but the prize, just received, is a letter from former President Lyndon Baines Johnson, written four days before he died.

CORNBREAD, SUNSHINE KEEP AUNTIE HEARTY AT 99

Cornbread and turnip greens, plenty of meat and strong drip coffee, and Southwest Louisiana sunshine form a combination that promotes old age, according to Aunt Louise" Fox, who was 99 years of age Christmas Day, and claims the honor of being Jeff Davis Parish's oldest taxpayer.

"What do you eat, Auntie?" inquired a member of the city force Wednesday morning at the mayor's office, as the aged woman paid her taxes.

"Honey, I eat anything I can get and I like my meat and coffee," she said. "I ain't good-for-nothing yet; I do all my house work and cooking and I sleep fine"

Efforts made to establish grid team at Elton

Efforts are being made to establish a football team for the Elton high school.

A special meeting of the Guillory-Buller Post 318 of the Elton American Legion was held at the Legion Hall last week to discuss the matter, and the committee will hold another meeting tonight.

Anthony Jennings, president of the Jeff Davis Parish School Board, was guest speaker of the evening. He was called on to find out how much help could be expected of the school board in this project.

Alba Heywood to present CD lecture

The first of a series of programs aimed at expanding city and parish civil defense measures will be presented Thursday, 7 p.m., in the Jeff Davis Trade School auditorium.

Lecturer for Thursday's program will be Alba Heywood, who will outline ways in which the American people can survive nuclear attack.

Heywood's talk, titled "Nuclear War Can Be Survived," will be illustrated with charters. Earlier presentations by Heywood at Port Arthur, Tex., and Lafayette drew enthusiastic response.

Broken hip and broken shoulder caused by booze
