Football On Thanksgiving

There will be a game of football between the New Orleans and Jennings high school teams on the fair grounds Thanksgiving Day, Thursday afternoon at three o'clock. More particulars tomorrow.

Possum breaks in saloon to lick up hard liquor

Possums are getting numerous in Jennings but when they steal into a saloon to lick up spilled whiskey and beer, it's something else.

When Belezare Lopez and Mark Langley were working around Joe's Bar No. 2 Tuesday night, they noticed an animal behind the counter licking up the beer and hard liquor which had been spilled during the day.

They opine they had little trouble in capturing the possum, which gave evidence of having drunk too much.

Man recalls the old Cowboy days

"Nothing gives me more pleasure," said S.A. Sutter of Jennings, La., "than to spend a few days at the Kansas City stock yards. It calls up so many pleasant memories, and brings back to me so many of the incidents that happened when I was actively engaged in the cattle business. I have been here a few days hunting up old time cattlemen, some of whom are now in the commission business here.

Pine Island chapel closes

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Chapel closed the doors to its chapel for the last time Sunday after the 7 a.m. Mass.

Father John Poerio, pastor, pointed out in this sermon, As times have changed, so have the needs of the parish of St. Lawrence. That is why we find ourselves closing the Pine Island Mission and the main church at Hathaway and building a church-hall complex to meet the needs of the present and the future."

Will Resume Milk Route Soon

J.T. Christian, proprietor of the Jennings Certified Dairy, came in from Elton today and stated to a Times-Record reporter that he would be able to resume his milk deliveries within the next few days.

Jennings girls defeat Iota in two games

Senior forward Susan Conner fired in 26 points last night to lead the Jennings Bulldettes to a 55-40 victory over Iota in the opening contest of the season for the home team.

The Bulldettes jumped off to an early lead. They forged ahead 14-9 after the initial period and led 18-15 at halftime. Jennings led 42-28 after three quarters.

Early pioneers on first visit in 50 years can’t find landmarks

Three old pioneers of Jennings came here this week and couldn't find the ancient landmarks.

They are Fred F. and C.S. Morse and their sister, Mrs. Carrie Lloyd, of Oakland, California. This was their first visit since they left here in 1906.

Fred Morse, 84, came in the news office yesterday trying to find some of their old contemporaries but it was a hard job.

"I'm afraid all the old friends have gone to the other side of Jordan" said Mr. Morse, who doesn't even wear glasses to read.

Elton man hooks 42-pound catfish

Here's a fish story of the big one that didn't get away.

W.C. Bruchhaus, of Elton, was fishing on the bank of the intracoastal canal with a light 18-pound test line when he knew that the had hooked a whopper.

Twenty minutes later, Bruchhaus succeeded in pulling in a 42-pound blue catfish.

The giant fish measured 44 inches in length.

The fish is in the Bruchhaus deep freezer now. They expect to eat a lot of fish this winter.

The Frozin Roy home is considered the first house to have existed in the area that later became the City of Jennings. The home was located in the area of North Main Street between 11th and 12th streets, according to the book “Jefferson Davis Parish: An Oral History” This picture is thought to have been taken in 1900.
