MERMENTAU – "Build me a castle, 40 feet high"

For the past 25 years, Lovic Desormeaux and his son, Philip, have been doing exactly that.

Located in a rural section of Mermentau, Le Petit Chateau de Luxe stands majestically amid the many moss-draped oaks, magnolias and pines that forest the vast 2,000-acre property on which Philip Desormeaux and his family were reared.

Great-great-grandson of famous lover of Evangeline dies

The death of Hiram Arceneaux at Beaumont Sunday, who was a greatgreat-grandson of Louis Arceneaux, of Evangeline fame, recalls the fact that there are many descendants of the famous lover in this parish. Hiram Arceneaux was 78 years old at the time of his death. He was an nuclide of Martin, Isaac and Morgan Andrus and Mrs. Laura Hebert of this city who are just one more generation removed from the man immortalized in Longfellow's poem.

Rites today for Buch, veteran printer and musician

Joseph Frederick Buch, 84, veteran Jennings printer, musician, weatherman and early newspaperman, died at 11:38 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Hospital in Lake Charles.

He was born September 27, 1873, near Topeka, Kansas, and came to Jennings in 1894 when the town was in its infancy. He and his family moved here from Towenda, Ill.

He entered the printing business as a boy and continued in that profession until just before his death. He and his son, Herbert, operated the Buch Printing Co.

Two arrested on highway with gallon of moonshine

Moses Simien and Thomas Colliere were placed in the parish jail this morning following their arrest by officers E.H. Langley and Albert Duplechain at Elton where the pair was arrested while transporting a gallon of moonshine whiskey. Besides the transportation charge, they are also accused of possession. Both have served previous sentences on liquor charges.

Muzzle your dogs

Proclamation of the Mayor of Jennings:

To whom it may concern: You are hereby notified that owing to the prevalence of ratties within our town, I, H.K. Midkiff, Mayor, hereby issue my Proclamation that all dogs shall be muzzled, and that all dogs found on the streets of Jennings not muzzled will be killed by the policeman, regardless of tax that may have been paid on them.

I do this in the interest of the Public Health in the Town of Jennings.

DEEP MYSTERY ENSHROUDS THE DEATH OF WILLIAM ROWE

Little knots of puzzled people have stood on the streets of Jennings today discussing the murder of William Rowe which occurred in the dressing room of the Getty factory last Friday night, and apparently all efforts of three detectives who have been detailed by the Burns agency to ferret out the guilty party have so far failed of any results, at least so far as the public has been informed. If the detectives have any clues they are keeping them under their hats.

LOCAL MATTERS

S.S. Mann and J. Boulanger, of Des Moines, Iowa, arrived Wednesday. They are prospecting in the interest of a colony of 40 or 50 families, with the intention of settling upon a tract of about 5,000 acres and propose to found a cooperative colony

The Lakeside base ball club is booked for a game with the Jennings club Saturday afternoon on the Jennings diamond. Turn out and see a good game.

Fierce flames are subdued after hard fight by firemen

Thursday night at about nine o'clock the fire siren aroused the people of our city and brought out the fire company will all equipment and full crews to work them. Also in a very few minutes an immense crowd was viewing the fire, which is Dr. Hall's large house at the corner of Plaquemine and Church streets.

Elton Indians mourn death of chief

The 92-year-old chief of the Coushatta Indian Tribe at Elton has died.

Chief Jeff Abbie was laid to rest Friday afternoon in the soil that he knew so well in the Indian reservation; the area that he had served as father for several decades.

The nonagenarian succumbed to an attack of influenza Thursday afternoon at the home of his son, Martin, who was also ill and unable to attend the funeral.

Last rites for Chief Abbie were simple and marked by dignity – the way the beloved chieftain would want it.

KKK compliments Rev. Ensign

Ku Klux Klansmen complimented Rev. F.J. Ensign, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, Sunday evening with a gift of $110 in the presence of an enormous congregation.

Ten representatives of the Klan in full regalia marched into the church at the close of the service. The leader stepped to the front and delivered the following statement to the pastor: "We as representatives of the K.K.K. hand you this donation of $110 to show our appreciation for what you have done in running down sin and crime"
