Dry Rot In Jennings

Jennings is suffering from Dry Rot, both commercially and religiously, according to Evangelist W.O. Stephens, who is now holding a revival at the Christian church.

What Jennings needs is a little of the old time "Pep" that was characteristic of the Jennings of ten years ago. The grouch and the knocker have no place in a town of this kind and are a public nuisance. The religious population of the town is deplorably divided in numberless small sects scrambling for mere existence and clustering around trivial sectarian dogmas that are not worth a moment's thought.

Fate of local structure still unknown

At a time when Jennings is losing the few remaining remnants of its historical past, the fate of the Jennings Southern Pacific Railroad depot, one of the oldest and closest ties to the city's origins, is still unknown.

L.J. Armentor, Southern Pacific district manager of real estate, told the Daily News that a policy which originated from a "bad experience the company had concerning liability" mandates that property within a certain distance from rail lines must be removed after their use has expired.

Youth escaped from prison gives self up, ‘tired of dodging police’

"I'm just tired of dodging every policeman about the country and I want to give myself up," said young Lloyd M. Rambo, of Woodberry, New Jersey, as he walked into the police station last night and turned himself over to Officer PW. Miller.

Rambo told the officer, who is working the night beat during the illness of Claud Schultz, that he escaped from the New Jersey reform school at Annandale in December 1936 and that he had been roaming over the country since that time, but had to keep dodging all the police officers wherever he went.

Local girl Wins Praise For Nerve Displayed

Many newspapers over Louisiana have made comments on the wonderful nerve and self-possession shown by Miss Burgeois of this city in frightening a burglar with a toy pistol. One of the best written articles which we have noticed in this connection is the one printed in last week's edition of the Opelousas (La.) Clarion, as follows:

A wee girl, reading to a wee sister and a wee brother in Jennings, last Saturday night heard a noise downstairs.

Thinking that it was the intrusion of a cat she descended the stairs.

‘Stromboli’ banned here by theatre, ministers may act

A rising cry is being raised in Jennings against that film of fictional and real-life romance "Stromboli"

Rev. Sam Nader, president of the Jennings Ministerial Association, said members of that organization are giving the matter thorough consideration and they will have a special meeting some time this week to consider action to take against the movie starring actress Ingrid Bergman and directed by Roberto Rossellini.

The Methodist minister said he is of the opinion that the body will unanimously oppose the showing of the film in Jennings.

It's a rugged old world for real gone cats, too

It's a rugged old world — event for cats. And especially so for real gone cats like Puggie.

Actually, if you want to split a cat's whisker over it, Puggie's whole caboodle of trouble stems from the simple fact that he thinks he's a puppy dog.

Puggie, given to Pat and Len Waske of Jennings as a practice joke on their anniversary (they don't like cats), knew right from the start that household opinion was against him, so he set out to become a dog.

FIRE DESTROYS HATHAWAY HIGH

A massive fire, apparently caused by a bolt of lightning from an afternoon thunderstorm, destroyed Hathaway High School Sunday, leaving Jeff Davis Parish School Board officials with a dilemma of finding schooling facilities for 415 students today.

Jeff Davis Parish School Superintendent W.F. Whitford said students who attended Hathaway High School would hopefully be returning to school Tuesday or Wednesday.

School board officials held meetings today to determine where the students would be attending school.

Boy, 8, saves girl, 3, from drowning in deep Lake Arthur

A Carnegie medal will probably be given to R.J. Bertrand, eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Bertrand of Lake Arthur, following the lad's heroic rescue of three-year-old Betty Jane Reddell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton J. Reddell of Lake Arthur.

Handsome contribution to orphanage

A very liberal Thanksgiving offering of clothing, food, etc. was made to the Jennings Orphanage by the Lake Arthur School last week. Each grade tried to see which one could contribute the most and Miss Laura Mc-Call's room ranked first, contributing a box representing about $26 worth of fruit and clothes. The seventh grade was second with a donation representing about $23. Some of the lower grades having fewer children contributed very liberally also, and the complete donation amounted to about $150 in a varied assortment of clothing, fruit, nuts, preserves, jellies, etc.
