Most JD acres signed for maneuvers

Every tenant farmer in the first, fourth and ninth wards have signed their agreements for the government to use lands they farm for the coming army maneuvers, Charles Pitre, secretary of the parish land rents committee said after a meeting yesterday afternoon.

The one hundred percent agreements of the tenants in these wards were highly praised by the secretary who announced at the same time that three-fourths of the agreements in all the other wards of Jeff Davis had been turned in fully signed.

Twenty Acadians picked to go to unveiling

Jeff Davis Parish will be officially represented by twenty descendants of the Acadians at the unveiling of the statue to Evangeline, heroine of Longfellow's poem, at St. Martinville on Sunday, April 19. The Jennings chamber of commerce has selected the twenty delegates from this parish to attend the rites and at the same time to welcome the Acadians from Nova Scotia who are making a pilgrimage to the state as follows: Charles R. Houssiere, Laurent Legros, Overton Gauthier, F.F. Arceneaux, James Richard, D.F. Castile and A.C. Gervais, of Jennings; Dr. Claude A.

NASCAR track may be possible

Welsh Mayor Jimmy Martin fears the early release of information about a NASCAR track could hamper plans to bring this facility to Lacassine.

"There is enough information in the Lake Charles American Press to mess things up," said Martin this morning.

GOES ‘WET’

After a long pull and a strong pull and a pull altogether, the prohibition forces yesterday lost to the whiskey men. The vote was light everywhere as a great many people had failed to get their poll tax receipts. The vote in Jennings was heavier than was expected, as there were 154 votes polled. Of this number, 98 were for whiskey and 56 for prohibition, giving the wet element a majority of 42 votes. In Lake Arthur, 13 votes were cast. Ten were for prohibition and three for license, a majority of seven for anti-licenses. Raymond gave eight out of ten votes for prohibition.

LEAGUE WILL FIGHT THE SALOON

Pursuant to a meeting held in Lake Charles Sept. 10, the anti-saloon people of Calcasieu Parish have issued the following circular: "Lake Charles, Sept. 11, 1907 "Dear Friend: Are you an anti-saloon man, and may we count on your earnest and hearty cooperation campaign for prohibition in Calcasieu Parish? "The liquor devil feels himself strongly intrenched in the four remaining wet wards of the parish.

The Jaenke bridge on La. 97 was originally built around 1901, and has been helping Jeff Davis Parish residents cross Bayou Nezpique for almost 120 years. The original structure was a drawbridge.

Civil Air Patrol meeting set for Thursday night

Plans will be formulated for the organization of a parish Civil Air Patrol unit at a meeting in the Jennings Association of Commerce office Thursday night.

The meeting is scheduled to get underway at 8 o'clock. Anyone interested in the formation of such a unit is invited to attend.

Both men and women are eligible to join the CAP. The unit here would probably train flying and ground personnel. CAP units are composed of pilots, mechanics, meteorologists, radio navigation and other technicians.

Socialist meeting broken up by mob

ELTON - Because it was reported that the American flag had been torn down at the Socialist encampment here Friday night, a mob formed and for a time threatened to do violence to the members of that organization. Through the efforts of the more prominent Socialists and officials here violence was prevented, but the episode broke up the encampment, which was to have closed last night.

Axe Death Blow Dealt By Hinchey

John E. Jacobs, the man who was struck in the head with an axe more than a week ago by EW. Hinchey, died at his home near China yesterday morning from the effects of a broken skull. Since the altercation between Jacobs and Hinchey, very little hope has been entertained for Jacob’s recovery, and he had been hovering very near death’s door for the past few days.

Mayor warns carnival to cease operations

On the day the Russell Brothers Shows arrived in Jennings, protests were heard against allowing them to operate here. The protests may not have been so much against the "Shows" themselves as they were against the questionable and "unquestionable" concessions attached thereto.

One party in describing a street connected to the outfit said, "It is a solid mass of gambling dens" But in this he was very much mistaken. A few of them may have run gambling devices, but a big majority of them conducted robbing machines.
