Pastor issues full statement on bathing beauties

The Rev. John J. Windt, pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church here, today issued a statement explaining the Church's stand on bathing beauty contests.

Father Windt made the comments after several statements attributed to him appeared in an out-of-town newspaper article on the Miss Jennings contest.

Refugee Fund To Be Helped

Strand Theater is expected to be crowded January 26 when the Southern Amusement Company, cooperating with several thousand other theaters and motion picture companies in the nation, will turn over all collections from the box offices to the European refugee fund.

A star picture, "Dr. Clitterhouse" starring Edward G. Robinson, will be seen.

Regarding the purpose to aid the persecuted in Europe, the release says:

Uncalled-for vandalism

Some miscreant last night nearly ruined the beautiful Davenport which after four years of patient endeavor Commercial Agent H.L. Davis of the Southern Pacific has succeeded in growing with Armour river hedge plants on the lawn between the S.P. passenger and freight depots. The young twigs were ruthlessly twisted or stamped off from the parent tree. The tracks in the soft soil beneath the hedge showed conclusively that the ruinous work was done by an adult. A good, long penitentiary sentence is what the miscreant mentioned above really needs.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Pratt of Evangeline, on September 27, a fine girl. Mother and baby are doing nicely and Dr. Foreman says Mr. Pratt will recover.

Man Shot Over Game of Cards

About 9 o'clock last night the quiet city was aroused by the report of a revolver and the cry of "help" coming from the lower end of the place. A crowd of men hurried to the place and upon reaching there found a man stretched upon the floor with his life blood swiftly flowing away, caused by a bullet received in the pit of the stomach.

Cavalry boys start on trip

Precisely at 11:30 last night, with bugles blowing and amid the shouts of farewell from the throats of the mighty concourse of people who witnessed their departure, Troop "B" of the state cavalry started on their four days ride for the Alexandria encampment.

The boys rode north on Lake Arthur avenue, through the town of Elton, and today should be in camp near Bayou Blue. Tonight the ride will be continued and halts will be made at Ward on Friday, Forest Hill on Saturday, arriving at Alexandria Sunday morning.

Jennings-Elton highway may be completed

A few weeks ago, a road district was formed of parts of Jefferson Davis and Allen parishes, to build a hard surfaced road to connect with the Pelican highway.

Welsh Rotarians begin bird sanctuary program

The Town of Welsh was once known as a sanctuary for birds because of the large annual migration to that area.

Now the Welsh Rotary Club along with town officials is working on a program to increase the bird population in the city.

"The Rotary Club started work on the project a month and a half ago. But it all began with Dr. P.O. Kramer, a retired dentist from the Welsh area," said Chip Kyle, president of the Rotary Club.

MERMENTAU MADNESS

Blown out, was expected as had been threatened

About thirty or forty feet of the north section of the Mermentau dam was blown out, presumably with dynamite, either Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The first news of the blowing up of the dam was received at Lake Arthur last evening, being brought to that place by a gasoline boat from Grand Chenier. The boatmen stated that three sections of the dam had been blown up and that thousands of pounds of fish had been killed by the explosion, the banks of the river being strewn with dead fish for some distance.
