Phone installation crews start work

Installation crews of the Southern Bell Telephone company arrived in Jennings this morning and immediately started placing the flash system, the date for the change-over being tentatively set for May 21.

Lonnie Clark, district manager, stated that the crews would place the new phones in the outlying district first and work up to the central portion of the city.

Donkey ball game to be seen again

It will be merchant against merchant as the local association resumes its warfare on Friday night at the second Donkey Baseball game of the season in the rodeo pen at the Fair Ground.

The game will begin at 8 p.m. and will be preceded by a parade at 7 p.m. which will begin at the Christian church corner and march to the scene of the battle.

Tribe may receive $18 million for casino

ELTON - A company based in Minnesota said Tuesday it has reached an agreement to build and manage a casino on the Coushatta Indian Tribe's reservation in Elton.

However, despite the release, Coushatta Administrator Paul Ruppert refused comment this morning until this agreement is taken under advisement by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

In a related development, Early Barbry, chief of the Tunica-Biloxi tribe near Marksville, confirmed that his tribe is considering building a casino on tribal lands but said he did not want to comment further.

Saturday schools to be stopped March 15

A special session of the parish school board was held this morning to consider the advisability of rescinding the action of the board relative to the Saturday school.

Every member of the board was present except one.

J.J. Robira presented the petition that had been circulated, requesting that the action of the school board be rescinded.

Mr. Robira spoke at length against the six days of school as being detrimental to the health of the children and resulting in unnecessary hardship on the parents.

LA.’S OLDEST CITIZEN DIES

Mrs. Joseph Istre of whom this story is written died the past Oct. 15, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Euclid Broussard, a mile and a half east of Mermentau. She was 113 years of age and active up until two weeks before her death. She complained over no particular illness, but just lay in bed perfectly conscious until she passed peacefully away.

Sailor hurt near Lake Arthur after epic experiences in far places

A few days ago in the early morning hours, fate struck a 28-year-old Texan while on the Intracoastal Canal below Lake Arthur and landed him in the Jennings hospital when he was within 200 miles of his destination.

What is it all about?

Well, it is a story of real adventure.

The man, James MacFadden Furlong of San Antonio, Texas, and his fellow mate, Joseph Polich, Jr., also 28, were guiding their 35-foot sailing vessel "Festina," through the canal, en route from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Houston, Texas, and when pressed by two barges, the boat rammed a sand bar.
