Cultural plaque dedicated at new Oil and Gas Park

A small crowd of Cajun people gathered at the Oil and Gas Museum Park Saturday morning for the unveiling of the French plaque by James Domengeaux of CODOFIL and Gilbert Bochet, Consul General of France.

Bochet spoke of the fact that many of the most highlyskilled technicians working around the world in the oil industry are of Louisiana-French origin.

He also spoke of his efforts to have Air France fly to New Orleans so that Louisianans could fly Air France to the North Sea or to various Arab oil-producing countries.

Stock Company Arranging Educational Institution At Elton

Among the papers recorded at the clerk's office recently is the charter of the New Castle College Ltd., whose domicile is fixed at Elton. The incorporation marks the beginning of what is hoped will become one of the most important educational institutions of the south.

SHERIFF TO ENFORCE BINGO BAN

Under Sheriff Azenor Buller, Jeff Davis Parish never had any slot machines or similar gambling devices, but church bingo games have been conducted.

Now since Col. Grevenberg, head of the state police, has outlawed these also, he says they must go.

"The law affects everyone, whether it is a social club, church or whatever it is," he said.

Fire department makes 5th run to house

For the fifth time in the past four years, the fire department was called to the big two-story residence just across from the rice mill, Sunday noon.

The latest call, like many previous ones, was for a slight roof blaze due to a defective chimney. No damage was done.

Mark leads to identification of amnesia victim

Laundry identification marks and personal labels on his clothing proved the means of identifying John Nugent of Houston, Texas, an amnesia victim who was arrested at Welsh Saturday night by Marshal Gillett, without money or papers and unable to say who he was or from whence he came.

Sheriff Azenor Buller brought the man here and made a thorough checkup of the case and found the identification clues, and the sheriff at once got in touch with Houston officials and found out who he was. Some of his relatives are due to return him to Houston.

Sister given up for dead located by brother

Given up for dead for a quarter of a century, Mrs. Lilly Mae Gibson, of Keysville, near Tampa, Florida, surprised her brother, O.C. Tupper, of this city this week when she came to the brother's home from Florida to pay a long delayed visit to local relatives, whom she had not seen for twentynine years.

Shooting Near The Oil Field

Just as we go to press, information reached this office of a shooting affray about two miles from the Jennings oil field.

Two brothers, Gerald and John Jennico, got into a dispute over a wagon. Gerald shot his brother with a shotgun. One of his hands was badly lacerated and a part of the shot entered in the body.

Gerald has skipped.

‘VOO-DOO' PAIR ARRESTED WHEN VICTIM LOSES GAME, JOB

A number of Jennings folk have lost their faith in certain forms of voodoo, particularly the good luck kind.

One of the victims told his tale of woe to an officer yesterday, showing a tiny blue bag filled with some soft substance which he declared had been sold to him as a good luck charm for $7.00. The voodoo doctor demanded $5.75, the victim said, the remainder to be paid when the charm had brought good luck.

The man said, "I done been tricked. I ain't had no good luck at all. Saturday night I lost all my money in a crap game and Monday morning I lost my job."

Lake Arthur native subject of history project

The trees growing in the area surrounding Lake Arthur might not be there but for one man's half a century of forest conservation.

He is Varise Conner, a Lake arthur native who has been in the sawmilling business for 55 years.

His first interest in logging and sawmilling was sparked in the 1920's when he worked for Home Lumber Co., a Lake Arthur sawmill at the time.
