Women Named New Parishes Just Formed

There is a strong likelihood that the state of Louisiana will have a Beauregard and a Jefferson Davis parish as well as a Grant and Lincoln parish, for such will be the case if the people of Calcasieu vote to divide their parish into four parts, and it is really believed here that they will.

First impressions are oftentimes wide of the mark, but they are absolute duds if you're trying to decide a person's occupation in this manner. Especially if you are meeting Dorothy Miguez Bryan for the first time. The lady is a licensed mortician.

Everyone thinks of morticians as tall, gaunt fellows, invariably attired in black, who speak in deep, sad voices. This is the TV and movie screen depiction.

Dot, to the contrary, is a pert little woman with quick ways, a cheerful air and lilting voice.

Fire Prevention and Clean-Up Day set for Tuesday, Oct. 5

Mayor Gamble and Fire Chief Taber have issued the following letter to all residents of Jennings:

All residents of Jennings are requested to assist in a general cleanup on Tuesday, October 5, to make a thorough inspection of fireplaces, flues, etc., take every precaution possible against a disastrous fire, see that the limbs of the trees in front of your residence clear the sidewalk by eight feet.

Historical information sought for centennial

The Jennings Daily News is searching for people who have memories of early Jennings as part of efforts to research the history of Jennings for the upcoming centennial celebration.

Some of the topics being researched include the L.L. Morse pagoda, the Mahaffey Hotel, the World War One Rainbow Division, the Quaker graveyard in Evangeline, the oil boom of 1901, the Great Fire of 1901, the old country club, S.L. Cary, original settling families, early rice farming, church histories, school histories and city government history.

Many will see champion football game

Tomorrow at Baton Rouge the state championship football game will be played between the Louisiana State University and Tulane. This is the game which has been attracting the attention of the whole state for the past several weeks.

Large numbers of people from every section of Louisiana have planned to visit Baton Rouge on this date, the railroads having made reduced rates for the occasion.

Daly Williams Writes of Visit To Historic Moscow

Master Sergeant Daly Williams is probably the first Jennings soldier to visit Moscow and he has written of a visit to the Russian capital. The weather, he says, is not yet freezing, but not far from it, giving a foretaste of what Russian winters are like.

Sergeant Williams, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Williams, is with the first American air unit to be sent to the Russian front. His letter follows:

"I have just returned from a short trip to Moscow and since I have little else to write about, I think I will devote most of this letter to a short resume of the journey.

On Saturday, Jennings celebrated the culmination of the recent parish seat fight by fully carrying out an interesting program of attractive events that were scheduled to entertain and enthuse the large crowd of visitors as well as Jenningsites themselves.

Rush made to buy Defense Stamps-Bonds

Jennings citizens, rich and poor alike, came to the post office this morning to buy Defense Savings Stamps and Bonds following the nation-wide appeal last night by the president and the secretary of the treasury.

In this undated photo is pictured a wagon used for hauling boilers from Jennings to Evangeline.

The eight-wheel log wagon was purchased from the Fruge Bros. Saw Mill near Hathaway. Mule teams or oxen were used to power these wagons. The boiler on the wagon is one of the old boilers out of the Evangeline oil field. This type of boiler was the first type used in 1901 for drilling shallow wells. Later on, around 1908, a larger boiler, a 45, was used.

Museum dedicated in ceremonies Thursday

Mrs. Ruth Zigler expresses her appreciation to area residents for their help in making the Zigler Museum, formally dedicated Thursday, a reality. The museum is the result of funds channeled through the Zigler Foundation which she heads. Guest speaker for the dedication was Judge John Hood of Lake Charles, who likened the edifice to a “temple” of learning and culture. A.J.M. “Bubba” Oustalet is on Mrs. Zigler’s left and in the background Robert Broadhurst, a member of the foundations’ board of directors.
