FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR FIRE AT WELSH

Fire originating in a Chinese laundry here Saturday night destroyed several frame business structures, with a loss of about $5,000, with insurance of $2,750.

The fire started in the rear of the Chinese laundry. The operator of the laundry left Welsh on the 9:45 p.m. train Saturday night and states that he left no lamp burning nor fire of any sort in the building. Fire was discovered about 10:30 p.m.

The following buildings were destroyed.

Grandmother Gets Letter From British Queen

A story in the Beaumont Enterprise of a 91-year-old great-greatgrandmother receiving a letter from England's queen was of great interest in Jennings. Mrs. D. R. Weyand, of Dallas, who received the treasured letter is the grandmother of Mrs. O.H. Clary of this city.

The story follows: Mrs. D. R. Weyand, a chubby great-great-grandmother of 91 years who knits a sock a day for the British dropped her first stitch in years today when she received a letter from Buckingham Palace. Written by Katherine Seymore, lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the letter said:

Strand Theatre will open at 3 p.m. Saturday this week

The new, complete and beautiful Strand Theatre will open its doors to the public Saturday this week at 3 o'clock.

An extraordinary attraction has been booked for the opening day being a special Paramount picture "For Better For Worse."

"For Better For Worse" tells the story of a doctor who stayed at home during the stressing days of the war and who was branded a coward by the woman he loved. She comes from a family of true patriots, patriots who couldn't see an able-bodied man wear civilian clothes in war time.

Drug Cures for Cancer Seen by Year 2000 in Rotary Talk

Drug cures and preventatives for many forms of cancer and heart disease will be found "by the year 2000, and probably sooner," a pharmaceutical company spokesman predicted here yesterday.

Addressing the Jennings Rotary Club at the Zigler Hotel, Robert E. Youngblood, local representative of the Mead Johnson Laboratories, said the prescription drug industry bases its optimism on the fact that in the last 20 years America has already introduced "more effective new drugs to combat or cure illness than all the rest of the nations in the world combined."

Electricity In Rural Areas To Come Soon

The Federal Emergency Relief Administration at Washington has recently launched, as part of the great recovery program, a rural electrification project which, in keeping with the President's desires, is part of a plan to bring the greatest amount of good to the rural inhabitants of this country in the shortest possible time. The sum of $100,000,000 has been earmarked to make the start toward farm electrification in the United States.

While the lecture by Rev. G.F. Bradford, pastor of the Christian church at Lake Charles, was not as well attended as it should have been, it was voted very interesting and instructive by those who went to the Congregational church last night to hear the well known lecturer talk in favor of the temperance cause.

Caution To The Users of Gasoline

It should be borne in mind that a pert attached to your insurance policy allowing the use of gasoline stoves does not apply to the use of gasoline in a flat iron for ironing — or for any other accessories. The insurance companies will not be responsible for fires or explosions resulting from the use other than specifically given in the permit.
