Red Cross asks for funds to assist in relief

The local American Red Cross chapter has issued an appeal for disaster funds to assist in relief operations along the Gulf Coast area, devastated earlier this week by Hurricane Camille.

Bill Howard, chapter chairman, said the local Red Cross operation had been asked to raise $523 to aid in rehabilitation of the stricken area.

Howard said anyone wishing to help could mail contributions to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 663, Jennings.

Motorcycle enthusiasts pour into city for festival

The 1999 Inaugural Cajun Prairie Festival of Wheels was hosted Saturday by the Jeff Davis Festival Association and Jeff Davis Tourist Commission in conjunction with several cycle shops across southwest Louisiana.

The event held at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park near I-10 offered bike lovers from across the state and beyond an opportunity to show off their rides and sample some of the cuisine and sights that Jeff Davis Parish has to offer.

‘No more sympathy,’ Peters says

Judge Walter Peters said in 31st Judicial District Court yesterday that there would be "no more sympathy or leniency" from the bench for lawbreakers.

"When I took this bench eleven years ago, I said I would be as lenient as I could but things have gotten out of hand. There are too many burglaries, robberies and thefts in the community. From now on, people who commit these crimes are going to the penitentiary.

In the celebrated case GW. Spencer vs. Mrs. Clara Barbe, judgment was rendered Monday in favor of the plaintiff. This case has been in courts three years and a number of suits have grown from it. It involved the location of Spanish grant lines on Lake Arthur and was brought to locate a starting point of a survey of Mr. Jackson, U.S. surveyor, in 1811 and 1826. The case concerns all property in and about Lake Arthur, in fact all of township 11 south, range 3 west.

SOUTHERN PRESIDENT TO SPEAK AT JEFF DAVIS SCHOOL DEDICATION

Dr. Felton G. Clark, president of Southern University, Scotlandville, will deliver the main address at dedication ceremonies at the new $366,000 Jeff Davis High School here Sunday.

The dedication and open house program will get underway at 3 p.m. in the school gym-auditorium.

The modern building, located on South Cutting Avenue here, was opened for the first time in September. It has a student body of 320 youngsters in grades 8 through 12 and a faculty of 15 including principal, Wilbert D. Rochelle.

West End Elementary gets Internet access

When West End Elementary Principal Albay Hanks sits back in his office, he can't help but smile. The large grin on his face means school is just around the corner.

West End houses nearly 500 students in three grades and, according to Hanks, is fully staffed for the upcoming school year.

For those new students and the old ones alike, there will be a slight change from the 1997-98 school year.

Arrival of CODOFIL teachers set

Two French-speaking teachers will be coming to Jeff Davis Parish later this month to take part in the initiation of a parish-wide CODOFIL program.

According to a report submitted by Asst. Supt. Lou Gaudet to the Jeff Davis Parish School Board last night, the board will have to send someone to Baton Rouge on Aug. 30 and bring them to Jeff Davis where they will be teaching the French language on a second grade level in many of the parish schools.

Harvest influences school opening

J.C. Neely, Jefferson Davis Parish Superintendent of Schools, announced today the postponement of the starting date for all parish schools.

The starting date for all parish schools has been changed from Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 12. Neely emphasized that this applies to all public schools in Jeff Davis Parish.

All school board members have been told about this and it is the consensus of the majority of the members that this will be of help in solving the problem of harvesting rice in the area, he said.

School Tots To Be Charged 5 cents For Hot Lunches

School children will have to pay five cents for their lunch this year. Last year it was served free in the parish.

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board decided this morning to charge that amount for lunches throughout the parish this year.

Last year on May 6, the state dropped its support for the lunch program, causing the various schools in the parish to drain their cafeteria treasury.
