Cyclone kills 5, injures 23

A cyclone struck Mermentau about 2:30 Thursday afternoon. It last four or five minutes doing much damage. According to Mayor Harrington, four person were killed outright and one died last night from injuries received during the storm. Twenty-three were injured, several of whom it is thought will not live. It was necessary to send two of the injured to the hospital at New Orleans.

Specialist Coming To Sanitarium

The attention of persons suffering from Eye, Ear, Nose or Throat troubles is called to the fact that a clinic will be held at the Sanitarium Friday, Feb. 25th, at which all persons suffering from any of the above diseases may have their cases examined by a Specialist.

No extra charge will be made for examination. Dr. Ilea will be here from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will examine all patients and operate on those who are ready, and arrange a date for those who may wish to be operated on later.

Ten Dollars or Ten Days for Fight For Whiskey

Tom Edwards, an itinerant umbrella mender, and Jim Herndon, a cook with the same meandering habits, got into a controversy as to who should be the custodian of a certain bottle of booze Sunday afternoon, resulting in a final entanglement of fists and faces. Today both are languishing in the city jail for lack of facilities for extracting themselves from its environments, because when confronting Mayor Gamble this morning, he said, "Two dollars or 10 days."

ORDAINED AT 71, FULFILLS A WISH

Nearing her 71st birthday, Carlena Waltrip surprised friends and relatives alike when she was ordained a minister last Thursday.

Mrs. Waltrip is the wife of the late James Waltrip and together they founded and helped build the Faith Tabernacle Church here in 1933.

“He wanted me to be ordained years ago,” Mrs. Waltrip explained, “but I thought it was sufficient for him to take care of the church” However, after James died four years ago there have been special requests for her to perform services and rites.

Hunters Come South

The Mermentau River and the lakes along its course are very fast becoming favorite resorts for many hunting clubs from northern states. The Macon county (Illinois) hunting club is now taking an outing at Shell Beach and another large part from Canton, Ill., is now on its way to another point along the river.

This party was in New Orleans Wednesday. In speaking of the trip the Picayune of Thursday says:

DOME BOUND

The bone will definitely be in the dome on Friday evening as the Jennings Bulldogs and the Welsh Greyhounds will be playing at the Super Dome in New Orleans.

The football teams from Jennings and Welsh will be leaving on Thursday morning so they can practice as the Super Dome that evening.

Indians meet Eagles in Class A semi› finals Friday

MORGAN CITY - Elton's "Mighty" Indians move into the state semifinals for the second consecutive year Friday night when they trek to Morgan City to clash with the Eagles of Central Catholic in the Class A football playoffs. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. with Morgan City High Stadium as the site. Coach Cleve Beard's team reached the Class B semifinals in 1969 before bowing to eventual state champ Kentwood by 29-0 in a tilt played in Elton. "We expect a real tough contest," said Eagle mentor Andy Robichaux.

Tigers nudge Panthers in double overtime

LAKE ARTHUR - To say the least, it was an emotionally-draining contest.

And when Kip Carter hauled in a pass in the back of the end zone, sheer bedlam broke loose in Lake Arthur.

Fans in the stands rose as unison in one. Those who had ringed the field were submerged in ecstasy. They had watched their Tigers fight back from a 15-0 deficit and overcome a determined, battling Bunkie Panther team, 22-15, to take a Class 2-A regional playoff win in double overtime.
