Lingerie Shower in Honor of Bride-Elect

Following the announcement on Monday of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Humphreys of the engagement of their niece, Miss Audrey Noel Wiggins, to Mr. Clyde Ratliffe Minor of Beaumont, came the invitation of Mrs. B.D. Ilgenfritz to a lingerie shower to be given at her home on Thursday afternoon at four o'clock.

The home was an elegant setting for this interesting function, being most alluring with glorious masses of sweet peas and nasturtiums for which our city is famed.

Pink heart molds and heart-shaped cakes were served the guests.

One man chosen for African-American draft call

Jeff Davis draft board had no difficulty this month in meeting its African-American draft call.

State headquarters requisitioned the local board for but a single black individual from the parish for January.

The selectee was 23-year-old Heywood Berry, Jennings, who was a volunteer and hence drew precedence over all others. He will go on to the Lafayette induction station next Tuesday as the whole contingent and will be "acting corporal and group" all combined. He is married and has one child.

 

THREE PRISONERS MAKE THEIR ESCAPE FROM PARISH JAIL

At 11 o'clock last night Louis Alexander and Frank Broussard and Albert Landry escaped from the parish jail by sawing and breaking out an iron bar from the lower south window. The instrument used was a case knife which they left on the sill. Where the iron entered the casement it was badly eroded and easily broken off, when the other part of the bar was sawn through. The night was stormy and the men met with no interruption.

Alexander and Broussard were detained as witnesses in the case of John Riggs, a man convicted of murder and sentenced to hang.

WELSH - While Mr. Drury was busy selling buggies, Mrs. Drury was busy redecorating. The Welsh Department of the Jennings Times reported Jan. 4, 1894, that Mrs. Drury had the southeast porch of her and her husband’s residence enclosed with glass to form a conservatory. It was then filled with plants and flowers.

The City of Jennings had microfilmed and donated local historical documents to the Jennings Carnegie Library. Making the presentation to librarian Laura Myers is City Clerk Saday Manuel. The documents may be viewed at the library, located on Cary Avenue.

During the 1951 Oil Jubilee, people gathered on the Lake Arthur pier for festival-related activities.

Texas man dies at 111; rites here

Funeral services were held here Tuesday for an 111-year-old Port Arthur, Tex., man, born in slavery on a plantation near Mamou just prior to the opening of the Civil War.

Pierre Lartigue was buried in a cemetery at Silverwood after services at the Christ Sanctified Holiness Church here, leaving more than 170 direct descendants.

The Revs. N.C. Swallow of Port Arthur and G.C. Chaney of Jennings officiated at the 1 p.m. service.

Grand jury says rice buyers in conspiracy

The Grand Jury of Jefferson Davis Parish is endeavoring to put a stop to the practice among the rice buyers of agreeing on a fixed price for rice, permitting one of the buyers to make the purchase, and then dividing the rice after the sale is made.

Stock Sale Assures Country Club

A new country club will be constructed here.

V.B. McCutchen, president of the Jeff Davis Holding Corp., announces that more than 80 of the 100 shares of stock for the club have been subscribed, and the remaining shares, at $500 each, will be placed within the next two weeks. Members are from several parish communities.
