MICHELLE OBAMA DISCUSSES NEW MEMOIR AT LIBRARY CONFERENCE

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama will discuss her upcoming memoir “Becoming” as she kicks off the American Library Association’s annual conference in New Orleans. Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden will moderate a conversation Friday with Obama at the city’s convention center.

Obama’s book chronicles the experiences that have shaped her, from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive and her time at the White House.

POLICE: MAN ARRESTED AFTER FAMILY SPAT CAUSES FATAL PILEUP

DIAMONDHEAD, Miss. (AP) — Police say one person is dead and another is in custody after a family argument caused vehicles to pile up on a Mississippi highway.

Fifty-six-year-old Fred Harris Johnson is charged with manslaughter and mayhem for the Thursday wreck on Interstate 10.

AgCenter field day expo offers new forum for ag info

WINNSBORO — The LSU AgCenter hosted its first-ever field day expo on June 19 in Winnsboro, expanding the concept of a traditional row crop field day to include information on horticulture programs, wildlife and other topics.

About 160 people came to the expo at the AgCenter Tom H. Scott Research, Extension and Education Center.

Millers fall to District rival St. Landry Bank

CROWLEY - The Crowley Millers needed a few breaks to go their way Thursday in their showdown with Seventh District rival St. Landry Bank at Miller Stadium.

Those breaks never materialized.

The Millers stranded eight runners, five in scoring position, and had more than their share of struggles on the mound in a disheartening 6-3 loss to the Indians.

German chancellor says migration meeting a ‘first exchange’

BEIRUT (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday said an upcoming meeting of European leaders in Brussels would be a “first exchange” toward finding solutions and agreements to problems connected with migration.

Speaking at a press conference in the Lebanese capital, she characterized Sunday’s planned emergency gathering as a “consultative and working meeting at which there will be no closing declaration.”

Merkel is visiting the Middle East amid a serious domestic row over migration that’s straining her ruling coalition.

Time to grow up, Louisiana

Louisiana, you have screamed, and pouted and held your breath in defiance until you’ve nearly made yourself pass out. It is ridiculous behavior for a child your age, and just you wait until your father gets home.

That’s what we should be telling our state right now. A message it needs to greatly hear – grow up.

Grow up, Louisiana. It is time.

You might be wondering what the sudden fixation on our state’s immaturity is, so here it is. Our state desperately needs a way to fund all the things the people of our state need.

The whole parish and nothing but the parish

“Jennings Daily News: Serving Jeff Davis Parish Since 1896.” It is on the masthead at the top of each edition’s front page.

There has been for years a debate over who this newspaper is “for” — the city, or the parish? Jennings is the parish seat, the lone city in Jeff Davis, people have pointed out. It’s supposed to be about daily news from Jennings, not the parish, others have told me.

What Republicans suspect about FBI’s probe

The struggle to uncover the FBI’s conduct in the Trump-Russia probe has made some congressional investigators deeply suspicious of the bureau. But what do those investigators think actually happened in the Trump-Russia affair — at least, what do they think the FBI did?

First, they’re convinced the FBI has something to hide. In the last 12 months, the bureau has, at various times, ignored, slow-walked, resisted and downright stonewalled congressional requests, not to mention subpoenas, for information on the Trump-Russia investigation.
