Evangeline native chosen to co-anchor GMA

LAFAYETTE - Following a nationwide search, KATC has chosen Katie Lopez to co-anchor its number-one rated morning show, “Good Morning Acadiana.” Lopez has served as GMA’s Right Now Desk reporter for the past three years, most recently as interim co-anchor.

She has officially joined long-time KATC weather and news personality Dave Baker at the news desk.

Funeral Services for Ricky Joe Waltrip, 60, of Jennings will be held in Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, June 25, 2018, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Joey Dugas officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 24, from noon until 9 p.m., and will resume on Monday, June 25, from 8 a.m. until the time of his funeral services. Ricky will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery. Ricky was born in Baytown, Texas, on July 21, 1957, to Robert Waltrip and Barbara Hickey Beal. He was called to his Heavenly Father on June 21, 2018.

Coushatta to celebrate 45th anniversary of tribal recognition

ELTON - The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the day it received tribal recognition from the federal government Wednesday, June 27.

A public celebration to honor this occasion will begin at 9 p.m. with music and a display of fireworks at the tribe’s administration building at 1958 CC Bel Road in Elton.

On June 27, 1973, the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana received federal recognition as an independent Native American tribe after being dropped from the official roll.

Jennings Fire Department held its weekly drill at a Mermentau shipyard Thursday evening. Firefighters were tasked with finding and removing two fellow firefighters, who played the role of workers passed out from heatstroke, from the hull of two ships currently under construction.
