The Word: Exhibit details evolution of books

Zigler Art Museum will host the “Reading The World: Tablet to Tablet” exhibit from Thursday, July 5, to Tuesday, July 3. The Calcasieu Parish Library loaned the exhibit to the museum.

The exhibit consists of 10 displays, which take the viewer through the evolution of books and how different cultures have contributed to the world through written word.

Ichi-who? Suzuki sits on M’s bench in mustache disguise

NEW YORK (AP) — Just who was that guy sitting on the Seattle Mariners bench, the odd fellow with the bushy mustache, shades and a hoodie?

Wait a second — it was Ichiro!

Now a team executive, Ichiro Suzuki donned a Bobby Valentine-style disguise and sneaked into the Seattle dugout Thursday to watch a bit of the action at Yankee Stadium.

Exactly as he hinted, in fact.

“He was perfect. I never would have known it was him,” Valentine texted to The Associated Press.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Phoenix Suns stayed close to home for their first No. 1 pick. The Dallas Mavericks looked all the way to Slovenia for the player they hope can be their next European superstar.

Shortly after the Suns took Deandre Ayton to start the NBA draft Thursday night, the Mavericks traded up two spots for the rights to Luka Doncic.

The Atlanta Hawks swapped the rights to Doncic, the No. 3 pick who has spent the last year winning championships all over Europe, to Atlanta for Trae Young, the No. 5 selection from Oklahoma.

Ankle monitors lead cops to suspects

Jennings police arrested two male juveniles Wednesday after they allegedly held a third unnamed juvenile at gunpoint before robbing him.

The two suspects, who were both on juvenile probation at the time of the alleged robbery, were captured because of the GPS on their ankle monitor bracelets, interim police chief Danny Semmes said.

“These two were wearing ankle bracelets because they were not supposed to leave their homes,” Semmes said. “Because of GPS, we were able to locate them easily.”

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union started enforcing tariffs Friday on American imports like bourbon, peanut butter and orange juice, part of a growing global trade rift that’s likely to intensify over the next few weeks.

The EU tariffs on $3.4 billion worth of U.S. products are in retaliation for duties the Trump administration has imposed on European steel and aluminum.

Sales tax talks hit ‘extreme deadlock’ in La. House

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Lawmakers in the Louisiana House are having trouble bridging the same divides that left two previous special sessions this year without a tax deal, disagreeing about fractions of a penny.

As the House returns Friday for further negotiations, lawmakers are wondering if this third special session called by Gov. John Bel Edwards will end with the same inaction as the first.

Republican House Speaker Taylor Barras urged lawmakers Thursday night to continue tax talks, to try to break the stalemate.
