LA: Goals near streets becoming an issue

LAKE ARTHUR - Recently, there have been a number of complaints received about children setting up their basketball goals near the sides of the roadways.

“The children have the goals placed near the edge of the streets,” said Town Councilman Auldon Robinson. “This creates a danger for the kids playing and a hazard for motorists driving on the road.”

Robinson said it could become an issue of impeding traffic as well.

Lake Arthur millage rates to remain unchanged in 2019

LAKE ARTHURResidents can expect to see the same millage rates as the previous year.

Ad valorem taxes are a source of revenue for all municipalities and all properties that are subject to taxation are required to comply.

The Town of Lake Arthur discussed their millage rates for the year of 2019.

Jennings throttles Kaplan 25-4 to advance

YOUNGSVILLE – The Jennings Bronco All-Stars moved one step closer to a Super Regional title on Saturday morning with a 25-4 pasting of Kaplan in a winners bracket game at the Youngsville Sports Complex. After drilling the Iberia Americans 18-8 in their opening round game on Thursday, Jennings met rival Kaplan in a game that arguably featured the two favorites to win the tournament. Kaplan has been the only team to have pushed Jennings in postseason tournaments, however the boys in maroon left little to doubt in this contest in their 21-run win.

Jennings Pony All-Stars Finish Third

The Jennings Pony All-Stars capped off their season over the weekend by finishing third in their Super Regional Tournament held in Youngsville.The All-Stars advanced to the tournament by finishing third in their Section Tournament a week earlier in Crowley.

Gauff loses at Wimbledon, Williams wins again

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Coco Gauff’s unexpected but remarkable run at Wimbledon is over.

The 15-year-old American, who became the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon’s main draw in the professional era, lost to former No. 1 Simona Halep 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round on Monday.

Gauff knocked out five-time champion Venus Williams in the first round, and then saved two match points in the third round to reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament in her debut.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month

With summer activities in full swing, it is important for people to be aware of the dangers caused by exposure to the sun. July is Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Awareness Month.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. More than two people die of the disease every hour.

Harmful UV rays are known to cause damage to eyes and skin and can also cause skin cancer.

Funeral services for Miss Ave Suire, 94, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2019, at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, with Rev. Charles McMillin officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, July 8, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., with a rosary recited at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Miss Suire died at 8:10 a.m. July 3, 2019, in Camelot Place in Crowley. She was a lifelong resident of Jennings. She enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. She loved to cook and bake. Spending time with her family was her favorite pastime.

US adds solid 224,000 jobs; Fed rate cut may be less certain

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers sharply stepped up their hiring in June, adding a robust 224,000 jobs, an indication of the economy’s durability after more than a decade of expansion.

The strength of the jobs report the government issued Friday could complicate a decision for the Federal Reserve late this month on whether to cut interest rates to help support the economy. Most investors have anticipated a rate cut in July and perhaps one or two additional Fed cuts later in the year. That scenario may be less likely now.

Concerts, fireworks, military parade mark July Fourth

NEW YORK (AP) — The national holiday to mark America’s birth as a country has been filled with parades, concerts, competitive eating and, of course, fireworks.

Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, New York and other places around the country are holding massive celebrations with big name artists like Jennifer Hudson, Luke Bryan and Carole King.

Aftershocks following Southern California earthquake

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The strongest earthquake in 20 years shook a large swath of Southern California and parts of Nevada on the July 4th holiday, rattling nerves and causing injuries and damage in a town near the epicenter, followed by a swarm of ongoing aftershocks.

The 6.4 magnitude quake struck at 10:33 a.m. Thursday in the Mojave Desert, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, near the town of Ridgecrest, California.
