Students participate in SOWELA JumpStart program

Students recently participated in the Jeff Davis Parish JumpStart Summers program held at SOWELA Technical Community College in Jennings. This program was a four-week summer session designed for rising 10th graders. The program is free of charge to participants and provides an opportunity for students to explore future career paths.

On June 18-20, over 50 youth visited the Louisiana State University (LSU) Campus in Baton Rouge to compete or go through a series of educational classes. Youth were able to experience what college life is like while staying on campus those few days.

July Gardens of the Month announced

The Jennings Garden Club recently announced the July winners of the Garden of the Month. The residential award went to Doug and Janine Hollier, of 2003 South Lake Arthur Avenue. The business Garden of the Month can be found at Our Savior’s Church. Guilliam Nel and Luci Arsement are pictured.

The new parish jail was the site of a grand opening Wednesday. Please share this news with every single person you know. Go tell it on the mountain.

This has been a lengthy project, at least five years in the making. Five years is a long time but incessant complaints and repetitive questions made the project feel much longer.

Detained children are being used as political pawns

When faced with two women who each claimed to be the mother of the same child, King Solomon announced that he would slice the child in two and give half to each claimant.

One woman was pleased. The other wailed in sorrow, and begged the king to give the child to her opponent.

Solomon immediately understood that the woman who wanted to save the child even though it meant she’d lose him was the true mother.

Lawsuit forces construction of jail

The police jury for Jefferson Davis Parish will at once provide for the construction of a permanent jail, meant for the properly and orderly administration of justice in this parish.

This action will follow the judgement rendered this morning in the Fifteenth Judicial Court by Judge Alfred M. Barbe after hearing evidence and short arguments in the case of the State of Louisiana Ex Rd. T.A. Edwards, District Attorney, et als. Vs. the Police Jury of Jefferson Davis Parish.

W.P. Cary is erecting a horse stable.

The Calcasieu sugar refinery began grinding cane on Monday.

J.P. Black moved the D. Moultry house up Tuesday from the south part of town and has located it upon his Cutting Avenue property. It will be fitted for rent.

The first railroad engine that has ever crossed Bayou Que Tortue pulled over the new bridge Oct. 21, track-laying having been completed at the Vermilion canal. It is expected to reach the new town of Gueydan by Nov. 10.

Jeff Davis farmers unload rice at the Henry warehouse in 1898. In 1884 there were approximately 1,000 acres planted in rice in the Jennings area. By 1890 this acreage had increased to about 9,000 acres. In 1889, 26 carloads of rice were shipped out of the Jennings area; in 1890, 100 carloads; and in 1891, 400 carloads.
