First impressions are oftentimes wide of the mark, but they are absolute duds if you're trying to decide a person's occupation in this manner. Especially if you are meeting Dorothy Miguez Bryan for the first time. The lady is a licensed mortician.

Everyone thinks of morticians as tall, gaunt fellows, invariably attired in black, who speak in deep, sad voices. This is the TV and movie screen depiction.

Dot, to the contrary, is a pert little woman with quick ways, a cheerful air and lilting voice.

Jennings High School will celebrate homecoming festivities beginning with the annual homecoming parade to start at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, with the lineup starting at James Ward Elementary School. This year’s parade marshal will be Will Gilbeaux, Jr., former JHS principal. A town pep rally will follow at Jerry Simmons Stadium starting at 6 p.m., weather permitting. Jennings High School will host its second annual Homecoming Social, with all alumni invited to attend. There will be light hors d’oeuvres and cake with a tour of the school available.

During the September meeting of Frank Thibodeaux Post 520 of the American Legion, Department of Louisiana from Jennings, Post members selected the winning tickets for their annual fundraising drawing. The first prize and second prizes were 58-inch flat screen televisions, which were won by Kyle Klein of Lake Arthur and Wanda Collins of Jennings, respectively. Charles Anderson, of Lake Charles, won the third prize, which was a $200 gift card.

Karen Trahan (above, at left), secretary-treasurer for the Welsh Museum, was introduced by club president Pat Deshotel (at right) at the Sept. 5 meeting of the Welsh Rotary Club. She spoke about the history of Welsh, its citizens and how these things are captured in the museum. On Sept. 12, the club hosted three Welsh Elementary fifth graders including (below, from left) Cooper Crochet, Azarias Bennett and Grayson Corbello.
