Grandparents were the guests of honor at James Ward Elementary Friday morning. Students welcomed them to the school’s Leader In Me assembly. Grandparents were then invited to accompany the children for breakfast.

Fundraiser to benefit local cancer patient

Jennings resident Peggy Seilhan is battling stage two breast cancer. Friends Supporting Friends is sponsoring a benefit to help the family pay for her medical expenses.

“Mom has been receiving chemotherapy since June,” said Seilhan’s daughter Mindy Stewart. “It has been rough on all of us.”

Stewart said the treatments began with a medicine named Taxol and her mother did that phase wonderfully, without much trouble.

“Now, however, she’s on the ‘red’ chemo,” said Stewart. “And she’s handling it in true Peggy fashion. She refuses to stop even though she hurts.”

Memorial services for Mrs. Jane E. Doucet, 54, of Jennings will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, with Rev. John Clark officiating.

Visitation for Mrs. Doucet will begin at 9 a.m. at the church and continue until service time.

A lifelong resident of Jennings, she worked as a dental assistant. Jane was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed gardening and spending long summer days outdoors.

Trump signals restraint on possible military on strike Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump signaled Friday that he’s not inclined to authorize an immediate military strike on Iran in response to the attacks on the Saudi oil industry, saying he believes showing restraint “shows far more strength” and he wants to avoid an all-out war.

Speaking in the Oval Office ahead of an early afternoon meeting with his national security team, Trump laid out new sanctions on the Iranian central bank and said the easiest thing to do would be to launch military strikes.

Last time, we discussed plants having special characteristics due to breeding, genetic mutations and the use of viruses to manipulate their appearance. This week, we will take a look at how to determine what’s going on when plants look fatally ill or are dead.

One of the classic and common symptoms that signifies something is just not right is wilted, weeping plants that turn from green to yellow and sometimes crispy brown. Let’s consider the evidence.

Two-story school official, now needs name

It’s official – the new elementary school in Jennings will be a twostory structure.

During a Thursday meeting, the Jeff Davis Parish School Board accepted architect Steve Hotard’s recommendation that they construct a two-story building to house 1,500 students in grades pre-K through sixth. The campus will be located on South Lake Arthur Avenue. The school building itself will be gated and have a secured entrance, with lockdown features in each classroom.

Pre-registration underway for Last Resort Car Show

Car enthusiasts interested in showing off their prized vehicles still have time to pre-register for the Last Resort Car Show in mid-October.

“The deadline for early registration will be Tuesday, Oct. 1,” said Last Resort owner and promoter Stuart Daigle. “We offer a discounted rate of $40 for those who sign up early. We do have a club package where four vehicles can enter for $140.”

On the day of the event, it will cost $50 to register, he said.

The three-day car show is scheduled for Oct. 18-20 at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park.

The staff at Jeff Davis Living Center organized a date night for residents Thursday, in which spouses joined their significant others for a candlelit dinner. One couple who opted to spend some time together was James and Shirley Harmon of Jennings.

The Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) is teaming up with LifeShare Blood Center in an effort to replenish the blood supply that is critical for many patients in Jeff Davis Parish.

IMELDA LEAVES 2 DEAD IN TEXAS, OTHERS STRANDED AND TRAPPED

HOUSTON (AP) — Emergency crews continued to pull motorists and others from high water Friday after the remnants of Tropical Storm Imelda soaked the Houston area, leaving at least two people dead during the relentless downpour.

The aftermath from Imelda, which drew comparisons to Hurricane Harvey two years ago, was blamed for major travel headaches as motorists slogged through waterswollen streets and air travelers faced flight delays and cancellations.
