FPD making progress on updates

FENTON - The Police Chief Luther Alfred had recently requested approval to use $75,000 from the police department’s account to make much-needed updates for his force. Village officers will soon see a new video recording system along with a new unit.

“We have received the Watch Guard dashcam and body cameras,” said Sergeant Vernon O’Quinn. “We will be starting the installation of the system in early November when our new Tahoe arrives.”

SWLA women’s conference to welcome Taya Kyle

Nearly 2,000 participants are expected to be at the 29th annual Women’s Commission of Southwest Louisiana, Inc. Fall Conference in Lake Charles next month, where women from around the state will be encouraged to “Get Inspired!”

“The conference is such an incredible event because it’s not only a major networking opportunity but a place where women in Southwest Louisiana are empowered and educated,” said Kathy Sonnier, the fall conference chair and vice president. She discussed how the annual event has impacted area women during a Sept. 4 talk with the Jennings Kiwanis Club.

Week one thriller

The Jennings Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaking 48-41 overtime decision to the 4A Leesville Wampus Cats Friday night on opening weekend of high school football in Louisiana. The two teams went back and forth at each other all night, trading the lead five times before Leesville needed only one possession in overtime to claim the hard-won victory.

Indians Fall to Oakdale

The Elton Indians dropped a 13-0 contest to the Oakdale Warriors Thursday night to open their season 0-1. The Indians will now preapre for a week two showdown with the Vinton Lions on the road. Seven Boston pitchers combine to 3-hit Yankees 6-1

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox pieced together a victory by going to the bullpen six times.

The problem is they’ll need to pile up wins and very likely need some help to make the postseason.

Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer and seven pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Red Sox to a 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

“It’s definitely going to be difficult,” Moreland said. “We’re not in the best of spots, but everybody in here is continuing to fight and try to help the team win.”

Tigers Rally to Top Basile

The Lake Arthur Tigers fought through a rough start to notch a 28-26 win over a tough Basile squad Friday night. Lake Arthur rallied to grab a 28-20 lead in the fourth quarter, but kept Basile out of the end zone on a two-point conversion to preserve a 28-26 win to start the season. Reddick homers again as Astros beat Mariners 7-4

HOUSTON (AP) — Josh Reddick homered for the second straight game and Alex Bregman had two hits and stole home to help the Houston Astros to a 7-4 win on over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.

The victory extends Houston’s winning streak over the Mariners to nine games and improves the Astros to 14-1 against them this season.

Reddick, who hadn’t homered since June 28 before Thursday night’s shot, put the Astros on top with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Bregman had an RBI double in Houston’s threerun first and stole home in the fifth to pad the lead.

Hounds Claim First Win of Season

Cyclone kills 5, injures 23

A cyclone struck Mermentau about 2:30 Thursday afternoon. It last four or five minutes doing much damage. According to Mayor Harrington, four person were killed outright and one died last night from injuries received during the storm. Twenty-three were injured, several of whom it is thought will not live. It was necessary to send two of the injured to the hospital at New Orleans.
