GM sues FCA over union bribes

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors is suing Fiat Chrysler, alleging that its crosstown rival got an unfair business advantage by bribing officials of the United Auto Workers union.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit, alleges that FCA was involved in racketeering by paying millions in bribes to get concessions and gain advantages in three labor agreements with the union.

Details of the racketeering have been exposed in a federal probe of corruption at the union that has resulted in multiple arrests.

Boss Moves collecting donations for senior citizens

As a way of spreading joy during the holiday season, one local organization is stepping up to make sure the elderly of the community receive a little something for Christmas. The public’s help is needed to make that happen.

Boss Moves will be visiting Camelot Brookside, Jeff Davis Living Center and the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings to deliver gifts to each and every resident.

The current jackpot for Jennings Daily News’ (JDN) weekly U Pick ‘Em Football Contest is at $400. The contest lets readers guess each winner of 10 upcoming high school, college and pro football games for the chance to win $100. If no person guesses correctly, the current jackpot rolls into next week’s prize. In the event of a tie, participants are also asked to predict the final score of an upcoming game. The person with the guess closest to the actual score is the winner.

Boy, 10, arrested for arson

The State Fire Marshal’s Office said a 10-year-old has been charged with aggravated arson in connection to a Jennings Elementary School fire.

According to a press release, the male student admitted to using a lighter and cigarette to set fire to a toilet paper roll and dispenser. School surveillance video identified the boy.

The student was charged with aggravated arson Friday and released to a guardian. No one was injured during the fire.

In observance of this year’s Great American Smokeout Thursday, Nov. 21, the Smoking Cessation Trust (SCT) is encouraging Louisianans to start their journey to quitting cigarettes forever by utilizing the free products and services it provides, the trust stated in a press release this week.

According to the America’s Health Rankings Report, 23.1 percent of adults in Louisiana smoke.

Al Sunseri fondly remembers the days when, in addition to shipping out truckloads of oysters to the city’s finest restaurants, his business at the edge of New Orleans’ French Quarter could also accommodate walk-in visits from neighbors seeking the main ingredient for a New Orleans Thanksgiving fixture — oyster dressing.

“We had a lot of people in the neighborhood that would just come in. They wouldn’t call ahead of time. They’d just stop in. We’d pack up a pint for them to go,” Sunseri recalled last week.

Supporting democracy means respecting voters

Wouldn’t it be great if the voice of levelheaded voters was louder than that of the obnoxious voter?

You know the type. They believe any person who does not vote exactly as they do is ignorant or immoral. They believe their preferred party or candidate has every answer for this nation’s problems, and anyone who disagrees is unAmerican, a bigot, a snowflake, etc. These are the voters easily influenced by mudslinging and misinformation.

According to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU), November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month.

An estimated 6 million dogs and nearly 6 million cats will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

JDP sees slight performance score increase

LAHS, WHS both earn A’s

Jeff Davis Parish schools maintained an overall “B” letter grade for its 2019 District Performance Score (DPS) but still improved by 3.3 points from 2018.

The Louisiana Department of Education released the 2019 DPS and School Performance Score (SPS) numbers last week. Each year, a variety of factors including state testing, ACT scores, graduation rates and more are used to determine how well districts and individual public schools are performing.
