Old rivals lock horns in Regional round battle

The Jennings Bulldogs will face a familiar foe this Friday night in the “Dog Pound” when the Church Point Battlin’ Bears come to town for a Regional round 3A showdown. The two teams met to open the 2018 season that resulted in a Church Point win, but had playoff tussles in both 2016 and 2017 that sent the Bulldogs on to the next round each year. The Bulldogs advanced to this week’s Regional round match-up by upsetting No. 10 Carroll 34-27, while No. 7 Church Point destroyed No. 26 Frederick Douglas by a final of 64-26.

Thanksgiving community food drive underway

A food drive aims to supply people in need with Thanksgiving groceries.

“From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, Miguez Funeral Home will be accepting donations of non-perishable or canned food items,” said Marissa Stutes. “Everything we collect will be distributed to local food banks across the community in time for the Thanksgiving holidays.”

Stutes said anyone who would like to donate is welcome to do so.

Late second-half rally lifts Iota over Wossman 32-22

IOTA – The No. 14 Iota Bulldogs used a ferocious rally to over come a 22-6 third quarter deficit to claim a 32-22 bi-district win to advance to face No. 30 Baker in the Regional Round of the Class 3A Playoffs. The Bulldogs scored 26 unanswered second half points to erase the deficit, led by four rushing TD’s by sophomore quarterback Dawson Wallace to claim the win.

LaBove leads Greyhounds to upset win

WELSH – The Welsh Greyhounds used the hard running of senior tailback Keegan LaBove and a very stingy defense to secure a 14-12 upset over the Franklin Hornets here Friday night in the bi-district round of the non-select class 2-A state playoffs.

LaBove scored on two long runs and the Greyhound defense held the Hornets to just 56 yards rushing for the night. Welsh will now be at home Friday night to take on the defending state champion Amite Warriors, who beat Welsh in the state finals last year.

US officials granting $29M for coastal protection

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Projects to protect Texas marshes from erosion and an Alaskan village from the Bering Sea are getting help from some of the 44 grants awarded Monday by the National Coastal Resilience Fund, a public-private partnership assisting communities threatened by storms and flooding from rising and warming seas.

The $29 million in grants announced Monday are being matched by nearly $60 million from government agencies and nonprofits in 20 states, the District of Columbia and two U.S. territories.

Police search for suspects in Calif. shooting, four killed

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Police in the central California city of Fresno were searching Monday for suspects and trying to determine a motive for the killing of four people at a backyard party and the wounding of six as dozens were watching football on TV.

Fresno Police Lt. Bill Dooley said “unknown suspects” sneaked into the backyard at about 6 p.m. Sunday and fired into the crowd.

Democrat Edwards wins reelection in conservative Louisiana

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Deep in the heart of the conservative South, Louisiana’s voters reelected Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards to a second term, shocking Republicans who had hoped to reclaim the seat on the strength of President Donald Trump’s popularity.

With his focus on bipartisan, state-specific issues, the moderate Edwards cobbled together enough cross-party support Saturday to defeat Republican businessman Eddie Rispone, getting about 51% of the vote.

Full school board to mull elementary name issue

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board will decide this week whether or not to use the Jennings Elementary (JES) name for a new school.

On the agenda for the board’s Nov. 21 meeting is a request from the Buildings and Grounds Committee for the board to approve its recommendation for a school name.

CASA volunteer receives prestigious award

LAFAYETTE – At the 17th Annual Together We Can Conference (TWC) held in Lafayette Nov. 12-14, CASA volunteer Melody Bertrand of Jennings received the Catherine Lafleur Legal Advocacy For Children and Families Award for her dedication and service in advocating for abused and neglected children as a CASA volunteer.
