U Pick ‘Em money up for grabs

Wouldn’t it be nice to win $400 just in time for the holidays? If you pick right, you might.

The current jackpot for Jennings Daily News’ (JDN) weekly U Pick ‘Em Football Contest is at $400. The contest lets readers guess each winner of 10 upcoming high school, college and pro football games for the chance to win $100. If no person guesses correctly, the current jackpot rolls into next week’s prize. In the event of a tie, participants are also asked to predict the final score of an upcoming game. The person with the guess closest to the actual score is the winner.

Tropical Storm Sebastien forms in the Atlantic

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Sebastien has formed in the Atlantic but is expected to stay over open waters. The storm’s maximum sustained winds Tuesday are near 45 mph (75 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says some slight strengthening is possible but Sebastien is expected to be absorbed by a cold front in a few days. The storm is centered about 275 miles (445 kilometers) northeast of the Leeward Islands and is moving north-northwest near 8 mph (13 kph).

Thanksgiving community food drive underway

A food drive aims to supply people in need with Thanksgiving groceries.

“From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, Miguez Funeral Home will be accepting donations of non-perishable or canned food items,” said Marissa Stutes. “Everything we collect will be distributed to local food banks across the community in time for the Thanksgiving holidays.”

Stutes said anyone who would like to donate is welcome to do so.

Old rivals lock horns in Regional round battle

The Jennings Bulldogs will face a familiar foe this Friday night in the “Dog Pound” when the Church Point Battlin’ Bears come to town for a Regional round 3A showdown. The two teams met to open the 2018 season that resulted in a Church Point win, but had playoff tussles in both 2016 and 2017 that sent the Bulldogs on to the next round each year. The Bulldogs advanced to this week’s Regional round match-up by upsetting No. 10 Carroll 34-27, while No. 7 Church Point destroyed No. 26 Frederick Douglas by a final of 64-26.

Chase named SEC Player of the Week after huge game over Ole Miss

BATON ROUGE – LSU’s record-setting wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been selected as the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the 58-37 win over Ole Miss on Saturday in Oxford, the league office announced on Monday.

Chase, a sophomore from Rummel High School in Metairie, La., became LSU’s single-season leader in touchdown receptions on Saturday with 13, moving past Dwayne Bowe, who had held the previous mark of 12 since 2006.

Nerf gun, Power Rangers claw cited by toy safety watchdog

BOSTON (AP) — A Nerf dart gun, ice cream-scented Nickelodeon slime and a plastic Power Rangers claw are among the toys topping a consumer safety group’s list of worst toys for the holidays.

World Against Toys Causing Harm unveiled its annual list Tuesday at a Boston children’s hospital.

A realistic toy machine gun, a “pogo trick board,” a yeti teddy bear and a pullalong caterpillar toy for infants also made the list.

The Massachusetts nonprofit has been releasing the list for more than 40 years.

Deadly attack leaves Calif. Hmong community in shock

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A close-knit Hmong community was in shock after gunmen burst into a California backyard gathering and shot 10 men, killing four.

“We are right now just trying to figure out what to do, what are the next steps. How do we heal, how do we know what’s going on,” said Bobby Bliatout, a community leader.

Sunday evening’s attack killed Xy Lee, a Hmong singer and musician whose videos on YouTube have been viewed millions of times.

White House aides: Trump call ‘improper,’ ‘unusual’

WASHINGTON (AP) — One top national security aide who listened to President Donald Trump’s July call with Ukraine’s president called it “improper.” Another said it was “unusual.” The two testified Tuesday at House impeachment hearings as the inquiry reached deeper into the White House.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, an Army officer at the National Security Council, and Jennifer Williams, his counterpart at Vice President Mike Pence’s office, said they both had concerns as Trump spoke with the newly elected Ukrainian president about political investigations into Democrat Joe Biden.

Epstein jail guards charged with falsifying records

NEW YORK (AP) — Two jail guards responsible for monitoring Jeffrey Epstein the night he killed himself were charged Tuesday with falsifying prison records to conceal they were sleeping and browsing the internet during the hours they were supposed to be keeping a close watch on prisoners.

Guards Toval Noel and Michael Thomas were accused in a grand jury indictment of neglecting their duties by failing to check on Epstein for nearly eight hours, and of fabricating log entries to show they had been making checks every 30 minutes, as required.
