Jeff Davis Parish 4-H members recently took part in Ag Day held at the parish fairgrounds. Students from local schools had the opportunity to learn about various agriculture-related topics.

ELTON - Drug addiction and alcoholism continues to affect many lives. Some often think there is no place to turn for help. One Jennings native, who knows the struggle himself, has a plan in action to assist Jeff Davis Parish residents.

Raise to Life Ministries will soon be open at the Keagan Center in Elton.

Glitter and Glue to host watercolor workshop

Registration is open for an art class where students will get the chance to gobble up a lesson on the holiday’s most famous tradition.

The Zigler Art Museum (ZAM) is hosting a Thanksgiving Turkey watercolor workshop from 10-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

“Join us for this fun and colorful watercolor turkey workshop,” said Instructor Jessica Trahan.

The workshop is for children ages 5-12 years of age and the cost is $10 per child.

Plan would protect 21 coral hot spots in Gulf of Mexico

(AP) - A plan to protect corals in the Gulf of Mexico is close to becoming a law, drawing cheers from environmental groups who believe leaving the corals alone would help vulnerable ocean ecosystems to grow.

The plan would create 21 protected areas off the coasts of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Thirteen of the areas would carry new commercial fishing restrictions, and that has attracted the attention of fishing groups, who want the government to take a cautious approach.

Contract approved to start $450 million Superdome overhaul

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The state board that oversees Louisiana’s Superdome approved a contract Thursday for the first phase of a $450 million renovation of the 44-year-old New Orleans landmark that became a symbol of the city’s rebirth following Hurricane Katrina.

The unanimous vote by the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District was to approve a $53 million contract for initial work on the stadium upgrade.

Fall looks like a second spring

We often associate spring with flowers, but take a look all around you. The trees are showing off their colors, and some are even blooming. Fall feels like a second springtime to me. There is a definite visual color change this time of year. Many plants are blooming and changing colors. One that I get very excited about is the flowering golden raintree in bloom right now. It’s gorgeous. It will make you do a double take when you see one.

LDWF receives 11 whooping cranes at conservation area

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and partners took another step in re-establishing the state’s whooping crane population Tuesday (Nov. 12) when it received 11 juvenile whooping cranes.

The cranes were received Tuesday at the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WLWCA) near Gueydan. Once the new arrivals are released into the wild they will bring the Louisiana population to nearly 80 cranes.

USDA to collect final 2019 crop production, crop stocks data

BATON ROUGE – As the 2019 growing season officially comes to an end, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to gather final year-end crop production numbers and the amount of grain and oilseed stored on their farms. At the same time, NASS will survey grain facility operators to determine year-end grain and oilseed stocks.

Dogs send No. 10 Carroll packing

MONROE – The No. 23-seeded Jennings Bulldogs took a business trip three hours up north Friday afternoon, and made sure they came back with an upset win over the No. 10-seeded Carroll Bulldogs in the bi-district round of the Class 3A Playoffs. With the win, Jennings improves to 6-5 and will now host the rival No.7-seeded Church Point Bears in a Regional Round clash at Jerry Simmons Stadium this coming Friday night.
