With the recent drop in temperature, the Jennings Animal Shelter is asking residents to help keep the puppy population warm. Donations of blankets have been requested. “Blankets, or even towels, can be very useful during the winter for the dogs,” said Animal Control Officer Chelsi Leger. “The shelter is mostly metal and concrete, so as you can imagine, it stays chilly in there.”

Leger said that with the shelter at near capacity, the donations are needed to make a difference in the canines lives.

City approves subdivision extension

The Jennings City Council approved a subdivision extension that the mayor said will benefit the city.

The Evangeline Gardens subdivision is located at the intersection of Robert Ave. and East Division St. in east Jennings.

“This development will help the community,” Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn said. “Anytime you can subdivide it helps with housing needs for the city and can increase the value.”

Attorney Kevin Millican said the subdivision met all of the zoning requirements necessary for approval.

POLICE: TEXAS BIKER GANG ACCUSED IN LA. ATM THEFTS

LAKE CHARLES (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff’s office says a Texas motorcycle gang leader and six associates are accused in ATM thefts from two Louisiana banks.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that 44-yearold Michael Cupp of Dayton, Texas, was arrested Tuesday in Liberty County, Texas, on a racketeering charge with bond set at $15,000. A sheriff’s office news release says he’s leader of the Brothers East Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.

CONSTRUCTION FINISHED ON FAMED BOURBON STREET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A revitalization of New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street has been completed.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell joined other city officials and community leaders Thursday to celebrate the $9.5 million project that began in September 2018 and spans the 500 to 800 blocks of Bourbon Street in the city’s French Quarter.

The completed Phase 2 project included upgrades to lighting, security cameras, and the implementation of a movable bollard system, better drainage, an improved sewer system, and new pavement.

Donkey ball game to be seen again

It will be merchant against merchant as the local association resumes its warfare on Friday night at the second Donkey Baseball game of the season in the rodeo pen at the Fair Ground.

The game will begin at 8 p.m. and will be preceded by a parade at 7 p.m. which will begin at the Christian church corner and march to the scene of the battle.

Fenton Elementary welcomes heroes

Fenton Elementary School held a Veterans Day program Monday, Nov. 11. The guest speaker, Sgt. Vernon O’Quinn, read a proclamation to the audience from Gov. John Bel Edwards. Students in all grades performed to honor veterans that attended, as well as those who were lost in war. Principal Frances LeBlanc led the ceremony.

November Gardens Applauded

The Jennings Garden Club recently announced the November winners for Garden of the Month. The business Garden of the Month went to Our Lady Immaculate School. Principal David Dupuis is pictured. Meanwhile, Marcia Pfeiffer’s garden on Roberta Avenue took the title for residential Garden of the Month.

Welsh schools thank veterans

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2019, Welsh High School (WHS) and Welsh Elementary School (WES) conducted their annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the WHS gymnasium.

The Honor Guard from James O. Hall American Legion Post of Jennings posted the colors to begin the ceremony.

Teachers of the Year Cody Gueringer and Chelsey Hetzel led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The WHS Band played the National Anthem.

Knights Donate to Special Olympics

Nov. 8, Donald Kratzer (right) from Knights of Columbus Council 2012 of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Jennings presented a $1,646.68 donation on behalf of the Council to Bobby Matt (left) of the Jeff Davis Special Olympics.The Council has also made a donation of $548.90 to the St. Mary’s Residential Training School in Alexandria to support its Special Olympics projects. The Knights collected the money Oct. 26 at the intersection of U.S. 90 and La. 26 during their annual Tootsie Roll Drive.
