Fallen journalists deserve a memorial

Journalists relentlessly pursue the truth in order to provide citizens with the information they need to be self-governing. And yet, for journalists, doing that work can be risky, dangerous and even cost lives.

Just 15 months ago the deadliest attack on journalists in U.S. history took place at the office of the Capital Gazette, the local newspaper in Annapolis, MD, when a gunman shot and killed five employees and wounded two others.

Several of my friends have retired from politics or will retire soon. I need to take this opportunity to thank them for their service.

Yes, we have just spent the last couple of weeks thanking our veterans for their service to this nation. Certainly there is no greater sacrifice than these men and women made than to sign that blank check to pledge up to, and including, their lives to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy as citizens of this great country.

Justice Dept. rolls out new program to combat gun violence

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Attorney General William Barr announced a new initiative Wednesday that would better enforce the U.S. gun background check system, coordinate state and federal gun cases and ensure prosecutors quickly update databases to show when a defendant can’t possess a firearm because of mental health issues.

Union enacts ethics reforms in wake of federal investigation

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union will tighten financial controls, ban contributions from employers and vendors to charities run by its officers, and hire an ethics officer in the wake of a federal corruption investigation.

Acting President Rory Gamble announced a package of reforms Wednesday designed to stop embezzlement and bribery that was unearthed by a continuing federal investigation into corruption that has implicated the UAW’s current and past presidents.

Chinese, other students flee Hong Kong as violence worsens

HONG KONG (AP) — University students from mainland China and Taiwan are fleeing Hong Kong, while those from three Scandinavian countries have been moved or urged to leave as college campuses become the latest battleground in the city’s 5-month-long anti-government unrest.

Marine police used a boat Wednesday to help a group of mainland students leave the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which remained barricaded by demonstrators after violent clashes with police on Tuesday.
