PJ to mull Lacassine property rezoning

LACASSINE - The Jeff Davis Policy Jury will be considering the rezoning of property in Lacassine from agricultural to commercial for a convenience store at its regular meeting on today.

A request will be heard from Derouen Heirs, LLC for a change in zoning classification from A-1 to C-1 for a convenience store. The store would be located on the southwest corner of U.S. 90 and La. 101 in Lacassine, according to Police Jury Secretary Treasurer Renee Hicks.

Public comments on the issue will be accepted during the meeting today.

Jeff Davis 4-H Dairy Club competes at state fair

The Jeff Davis Parish 4-H Dairy Club recently attended the State Fair in Shreveport. The members walked away with much more than prize ribbons.

“Our youth participated in the dairy educational activities which included the dairy cattle judging contest, equipment identification, showmanship clinic, the dairy capers contest and an ice cream eating contest,” said volunteer Kori Myers. “They also participated in both the open and junior dairy shows.”

VVA chapter to sponsor design contest

The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 1058 is currently working on a project to honor those men and women who served in the Vietnam War.

“We would like to purchase and erect a Vietnam veterans memorial at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park, where thousands of passing visitors could be reminded of those who bravely served in Vietnam,” said chapter vice president/acting president Webb Gotte. “There are many memorials for veterans, but we want this one dedicated specifically to Vietnam veterans. We don’t always receive the recognition we deserve.”

Supreme Court lets Sandy Hook shooting lawsuit go forward

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Tuesday that a survivor and relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting can pursue their lawsuit against the maker of the rifle used to kill 26 people.

The justices rejected an appeal from Remington Arms that argued it should be shielded by a 2005 federal law preventing most lawsuits against firearms manufacturers when their products are used in crimes.

Being a Boston Red Sox fan, I’m used to waiting for good things to happen and curses to break. Although I didn’t have to wait the full 86 years for the “Curse of the Bambino” to end in 2004, 24 years was long enough.

With that being said, eight years of watching my beloved LSU Tigers fall victim to the evil empire over in Tuscaloosa has felt just as long as those 24 years waiting for the Sox to return to glory.
