US superbug infections rising, deaths falling

NEW YORK (AP) — Drug-resistant “superbug” infections have been called a developing nightmare that could set medicine back a century, making conquered germs once again untreatable.

So there’s some surprising news in a federal report released Wednesday: U.S. superbug deaths appear to be going down.

Bishop who investigated sex abuse accused of sex abuse

NEW YORK (AP) — A Roman Catholic bishop named by Pope Francis to investigate the church’s response to clergy sexual abuse in Buffalo, New York, has himself been accused of sexual abuse of a child, an attorney for the alleged victim notified the church this week.

The attorney informed Catholic officials in New Jersey that he is preparing a lawsuit on behalf of a client who says he was molested by Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio in the mid-1970s, when DiMarzio was a parish priest in Jersey City.

DiMarzio said there is no truth to the accusation.

On paper, the No. 23 Jennings Bulldogs will look like a heavy underdog when they travel to Monroe Friday night to take on the No. 10 Carroll Bulldogs. However, things on paper don’t decide football games, especially in the LHSAA Football Playoffs. Sporting a 6-3 overall record, the Carroll Bulldogs will square off with a Jennings side that has begun to hit its stride at the right time of the season, especially on offense.

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers head into the 2019 LHSAA Class 2A non-select playoffs as the No. 13 seed with a 5-5 record. However, that record is quite deceiving as Head Coach Mark Deshotel’s group ready for the No. 20 Loreauville Tigers in a bi-district clash set for Friday night on the lake. The Tigers had tough losses to two of the top teams in the state in Notre Dame and Lafayette Christian, but fell short in games Deshotel explained could have been wins.

City taking huge steps to address blight

The city is taking the right approach when it comes to cleaning up and demolishing dilapidated structures around Jennings.

This week the city announced it would be addressing a large number of blighted properties that have been deemed unsafe or falling down by the city inspector’s office.

Typically the council addresses one or two structures a month, but this month they are addressing 14.

The Louisiana governor’s race has devolved into a trash-talking slugfest in its final days ahead of the Nov. 16 election.

Democratic incumbent John Bel Edwards and his Republican challenger Eddie Rispone have traded accusations of race-baiting and veteran-bashing. The state Republican Party dredged up ancestral history to hurl insults at Edwards. And the only debate of the runoff competition disintegrated into finger-pointing about lies told on the campaign trail.

Early voting turnout announced

Official early voting turnout results showed an 8 percent increase over the last gubernatorial election in 2015.

According to results released this week from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS), voter turnout during the early voting period Nov. 2-9 totaled 3,931, or 19 percent of eligible voters registered with the Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters as of Nov. 1.

In comparison, in the last gubernatorial election in 2015, only 11 percent of registered voters turned out to vote in state and local races.
