JDN CHANGES PRINTING SCHEDULE FOR VETERANS DAY

Due to the Veterans Day holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 11, there will be no print edition of Jennings Daily News published.

However, a print edition will be published Tuesday, Nov. 10, in its place.

SHELL TO CLOSE OIL REFINERY THAT EMPLOYS HUNDREDS

CONVENT (AP) — Shell announced Thursday that it is closing one of its refineries between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, after failed attempts to sell the facility. The refinery in

The refinery in Convent can process 240,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

It employs nearly 700 workers and 400 contract workers, who will be affected by the closure expected to begin in mid-November.

“Despite efforts to sell the asset, a viable buyer was never identified,” Shell spokesman Curtis Smith told The Advocate.

Board to mull in-person learning

In light of Gov. John Bel Edwards opting to keep Louisiana in Phase 3 until Dec. 4, the Jeff Davis Parish School Board will hold a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss options for returning all students to five days of in-person instruction per week.

“The community is requesting open discussions about returning to a normal schedule,” said Superintendent of Schools Kirk Credeur. “This meeting will be an opportunity for the board to talk over that matter and decide where to go from here.”

Four veterans living at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home took the time recently to talk about what Veterans Day means to them.

Walter Gary, U.S. Marine, of Jennings, served in Vietnam and was enlisted from 1968-1978.

“Thank you to my brothers and sisters who served,” he said. “Because of all of you, all Americans can live in freedom. Semper Fi.”

Gary said he joined the military after growing up with three brothers.

Local vet believes in service, respect

For some veterans, their service does not end after leaving the military. Army veteran Dennis Langley is one who continues to serve.

Born in 1965, Langley grew up in Basile and now resides in Jennings. He served in the Army from 1989-1996 and is now employed by the Jeff Davis School District as a bus driver and substitute teacher. Alongside his work in the schools, he is an active member of the American Legion, where he serves on the Honor Guard.

When he first joined the Army, Langley was motivated by both patriotism and a path to maturity, he said.

Jennings man shares passion for US Navy

Navy veteran Mike Trahan misses a lot about his time in the service — the camaraderie, the travel and even the sound of the jet engines he used to work alongside.

“I really enjoyed what I got to do. I’m glad I did it and I wish I was still in it,” said Trahan.

Trahan was born on Nov. 20, 1973, in Jennings where he still resides and works as a safety manager. His father was an Army veteran who served in the Korean conflict. Alongside his father’s example, formative memories from his youth inspired Trahan to take up the call, he said.

Friends, families and supporters of veterans hosted a parade Friday around the parking lot of the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in recognition of Veterans Day. Veterans were able to sit outside and watch as loved ones and supporters drove by.

Alpha Kappa holds meeting, bestows grant

The Alpha Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International recently met at the Raymond United Methodist Church in Hathaway on October 27. President Lucinda Stark conducted the meeting. Barbara Litteral provided the devotional. Cynthia Ardoin led the Pledge of Allegiance and Jackie Brown led the DKG Collect.
