LAKE ARTHUR - Mr. Louis O. Trahan, Jr. (92), a faithful husband of 70 years to Wilda Mary (Woods) Trahan and a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Nov. 1, 2020 in his home surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arthur, with Rev. Jay Alexius officiating.

Visitation will be held at the church Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, from 2:30-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m.

IRS makes it easier to set up payments

The Internal Revenue Service this week announced a number of changes designed to help struggling taxpayers impacted by COVID-19 more easily settle their tax debts with the IRS.

The IRS assessed its collection activities to see how it could apply relief for taxpayers who owe but are struggling financially because of the pandemic, expanding taxpayer options for making payments and alternatives to resolve balances owed.

Unless my Election Day expectations are badly mistaken, we’re going to hear a lot less from the U.S. Supreme Court in coming weeks than many anticipate, because the presidential election won’t be close enough to steal. If I’m wrong, the nation is in for a spectacle of legalistic casuistry, pettifoggery and intellectual dishonesty like something out of Kafka’s “The Trial.”

Election officials scramble to count ballots in key states

ATLANTA (AP) — Election officials in several key states furiously counted ballots Wednesday as the nation awaited the outcome of the race between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden and braced for possible recounts and legal challenges.

Parish election numbers reported

Election results for the parish are in, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS).

Jeff Davis Parish selected Donald Trump as their next president by an overwhelming 77 percent.

Democratic candidate Joseph Biden received 22 percent of the vote or 3,208 votes here.

Parish early voting totals showed 74 percent of early voters chose Trump over Biden’s 25 percent.

Jeff Davis also chose Bill Cassidy over Adrian Perkins for U.S. Senator with 76 percent of the vote.

SWLVH to hold first annual Veterans Day parade

The Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home (SWLVH) would like the community to join in for their 2020 Veterans Day parade.

The parade will take place on Friday, Nov. 6 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the SWLVH, located at 1610 Evangeline Rd. in Jennings.

“This is the SWLVH’s first annual parade,” said Julie Benoit, Activities Coordinator and organizer of the event. “Everyone is looking forward to it. We’re hoping it will be nice, warm weather.”

Virtual public hearing set for Nov. 10

The Joint Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee will conduct a legislative public hearing on Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. for the southwest region (Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis Parishes).

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the public hearings — commonly referred to as the annual DOTD ‘Road Show’ — will be conducted virtually through Zoom.

The purpose of the hearing is to review highway construction priorities for the fiscal year 2021-2022.
