Virtual volunteering opportunities

Volunteerism is the life blood of charitable organizations. Many cannot function effectively without volunteers campaigning for their efforts, handling day-to-day activities and serving in many other essential capacities.

During the pandemic, nonprofit organizations have been affected by social distancing recommendations. It’s challenging to lend a helping hand when those hands may inadvertently be passing on a potentially dangerous illness.

KCs conduct annual barbecue fundraiser, donate to youth group

On Sunday, Oct. 25, Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish finally got to conduct their annual barbecue fundraiser.

The Council initially planned to have the fundraiser on April 26, however, the COVID-19 pandemic created many supply problems for everyone, and the council was not able to get the required supplies needed to have the event on April 26. So, the event was postponed.

WELSH – For the Welsh Greyhounds, a tumultuous schedule, and a young team left them looking for their first win of the season Friday night after an 0-4 start. The Lake Arthur Tigers were coming off of a two-week hiatus due to Covid-19 restrictions. Friday night’s already longtime rivalry game brought on a little more meaning with the surrounding conditions of the 2020 season. Plus, it was Homecoming for the Welsh Greyhounds.

It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Wanda Ellen Rinehart announces her passing from this life on Nov. 2, 2020, at the age of 93.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings today, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, at 2 p.m., with Brother Paul Estes officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home today, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of her service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Andrus Cove Cemetery.

Pvt. Joe Trahan is liberated

Private Joseph Trahan, a Jennings infantryman with the third army, has been liberated from a German prison camp, his wife, Mrs. Clara Trahan, West Division Street, was informed yesterday in a telegram from the war department.

About the same time Mrs. Trahan received a letter from her husband which said, "I'm feeling okay that I'm freed from a German camp after being a prisoner for four months. I hope to see the good old U.S.A. in a few weeks."

The war department telegram said Trahan was being hospitalized in Europe and it may be several weeks before he was returned home.

Celebrations were held across the parish, including in Jennings, on Nov. 11, 1918, World War I Armistice Day.

Rites honor unknown GI of WWI

The nation pays tribute to the living and dead veterans of its nine wars today in a day of respect newly designated as Veteran's Day.

As in previous years, when Nov. 11 was named Armistice Day, the national tribute centered at the Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

Bronze Star in Vietnam service

A Jeff Davis High School and Grambling graduate has received the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam.

Capt. Joseph Broussard Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph "Jack" Broussard of Jennings, received the award during his second tour of duty in Vietnam for "meritorious service in connection with military operations ageist a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam."

Broussard now is attending officers' advanced courses at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Fred Ritter made 48 flights in raids on Japanese

Japanese seamen never felt safe, for they never knew when one of the Navy's big patrol bombers, covering vast stretches of the Pacific, might swoop down with guns spitting fire and death.

Stores here closed for Armistice Day holiday

Although there were no ceremonies to mark Armistice Day, all stores, except those usually kept open seven days a week, were closed in Jennings yesterday along with the bank and public offices and the library.

Schools did not close and no programs marked the eighteenth anniversary of the end of the World War.
