In the Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings, there stands a monument to the sacrifices made by Union soldiers during the Civil War. This monument was restored to its former glory just three weeks ago. The structure is one of many obelisks across the nation erected by the Woman’s Relief Corps (WRC). According to the WRC’s website, the organization was chartered in 1883 as an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a veterans’ organization formed after the Civil War.

Cardinals blow out NCS 74-45

CROWLEY – The Lacassine Cardinals (LHS) earned their second consecutive blowout win this week when they travelled to Crowley Tuesday night and hammered the Northside Christian Warriors 74-45. Since coming off a two-week hiatus, Lacassine has blistered their last two opponents by and average of over 30 points. Head Coach Micah Rasberry’s group saw 12 players find the scoring column in their win over the Warriors, including three in double figures.

JENNINGS SMACKS CROWLEY 70-49

CROWLEY – The Jennings Lady Bulldogs continued to blast anyone in their path lately, as they moved to 10-1 overall with a 70-49 beat down of the Crowley Ladies Tuesday night. The Lady Dogs got great scoring production from their entire team in the win, as they placed 12 players in the scoring column in the 21-point victory. Jill Fontenot had yet another big night for the Lady Dogs, as she paced her squad with 21 points. Jennings also hit eight 3-pointers in the win.

Chinese capsule returns to Earth carrying moon rocks

BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese lunar capsule returned to Earth on Thursday with the first fresh samples of rock and debris from the moon in more than 40 years.

The capsule of the Chang’e 5 probe landed in the Siziwang district of the Inner Mongolia region, state media reported shortly after 2 a.m. (1800 GMT). The capsule earlier separated from its orbiter module and performed a bounce off Earth’s atmosphere to reduce its speed before passing through and floating to the ground on parachutes.

Lawmakers: Insurance disputes slow state storm recovery

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Southwest Louisiana lawmakers Wednesday criticized the insurance industry’s handling of claims from Hurricanes Laura and Delta, describing slow responses, low-balled damage estimates and drones used to assess destruction instead of people.

“We’re almost four months ago (since Laura), and people are still living without roofs over their houses,” said Rep. Phillip Tarver, a Republican who lives in storm-ravaged Lake Charles.

Salt mine ceiling falls, killing two

AVERY ISLAND (AP) — Two people died when the ceiling in a salt mine fell in Louisiana, authorities and the mine operator said Wednesday.

A portion of the ceiling in a part of the underground mine on Avery Island came down on Monday. Sixteen employees were evacuated with no injuries reported, KATC-TV reported.

Rescuers found the two victims the next day, the mine operator, Cargill Deicing Technology, said in a statement.

The were identified as 27-year-old Lance Begnaud of Broussard and 41-year-old Rene Romero of New Iberia.
