Chinese capsule returns to Earth carrying moon rocks

BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese lunar capsule returned to Earth on Thursday with the first fresh samples of rock and debris from the moon in more than 40 years.

The capsule of the Chang’e 5 probe landed in the Siziwang district of the Inner Mongolia region, state media reported shortly after 2 a.m. (1800 GMT). The capsule earlier separated from its orbiter module and performed a bounce off Earth’s atmosphere to reduce its speed before passing through and floating to the ground on parachutes.

CROWLEY – The Jennings Lady Bulldogs continued to blast anyone in their path lately, as they moved to 10-1 overall with a 70-49 beat down of the Crowley Ladies Tuesday night. The Lady Dogs got great scoring production from their entire team in the win, as they placed 12 players in the scoring column in the 21-point victory. Jill Fontenot had yet another big night for the Lady Dogs, as she paced her squad with 21 points. Jennings also hit eight 3-pointers in the win.

Cardinals blow out NCS 74-45

CROWLEY – The Lacassine Cardinals (LHS) earned their second consecutive blowout win this week when they travelled to Crowley Tuesday night and hammered the Northside Christian Warriors 74-45. Since coming off a two-week hiatus, Lacassine has blistered their last two opponents by and average of over 30 points. Head Coach Micah Rasberry’s group saw 12 players find the scoring column in their win over the Warriors, including three in double figures.

In the Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings, there stands a monument to the sacrifices made by Union soldiers during the Civil War. This monument was restored to its former glory just three weeks ago. The structure is one of many obelisks across the nation erected by the Woman’s Relief Corps (WRC). According to the WRC’s website, the organization was chartered in 1883 as an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a veterans’ organization formed after the Civil War.

It’s my fervent hope the two Georgia Senate runoff elections are the last time conservatives will be forced to vote for Republicans because no conservative alternatives exist. For over 30 years conservatives have been told by the rich who run the Republican party that we have no choice but to hold our nose and vote for candidates who will turn on us immediately after they’re sworn into office.

Holiday Popcorn Snowmen

Yield: 5 snowmen

1 package (1 pound) large marshmallows

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, plus additional for greasing hands

1 teaspoon vanilla

10 cups popped popcorn

sprinkles (optional)

licorice (optional)

gum drops (optional)

cinnamon candies (optional)

In large saucepan, melt marshmallows and 1/4 cup butter. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let stand 5 minutes.

Fireworks come with responsibility

The Christmas/New Year’s retail fireworks season is underway. Certainly, the holiday season brings much joy and happiness; however, improper use of fireworks can quickly lead to tragedy.

For this reason, fireworks-related laws, rules and regulations have been established in the State of Louisiana in an effort to afford those who live, work or visit Louisiana the ability to safely enjoy fireworks during the holiday season.

Parish entities receive clean audits

Two entities in the parish recently received clean audits for the previous fiscal year.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLAO) recently released the results of annual audits on the financial health of the Jeff Davis Arts Council and the Jeff Davis Soil and Water Conservation District.

First off, the Jeff Davis Arts Council, doing business as A Block Off Broadway Community Theatre, recently received their audit results. The seven-page document looked at finances for the year ending June 20, 2018.

Given the choice between respecting the wishes of the 3.45 million Pennsylvanians who cast their ballots for President-elect Joe Biden and assuaging the wounded ego of the sad little man in the White House who already knows he’s beat, Republicans who control Pennsylvania’s state Legislature have chosen the worst of all possible worlds.
