According to the book “Jefferson Davis Parish: An Oral History,” the Jennings Girls was a group of singers who became popular in the 1890s. Women pictured are identified as Miss Anna Blackshere (Mrs. E.F. Rowson), Miss Eva, Miss Emma Wyatt, Miss Stells Garrison (Mrs. O.C. Stanton), Mrs. I.M. A, Miss Nettis Graham (Mrs. J.R. Mouton), Miss Nellie Himler (Mrs. W.F. Humphrey) and Miss Rose.

Welsh has fire department

At a recent date the citizens of Welsh met and organized a fire department. Chief A.O. Eastman of Jennings's fire department was presented and assisted with suggestions based on his long successful experience in that line.

A tentative draft of by-laws for the governing of the organization was offered. S.aE. Carroll has been appointed chief of the department, which is divided into four companies, each headed with a captain and a lieutenant.

Income tax returns due

The Income Tax imposed by members of Congress in 1919 is now being collected.

Returns under oath must be made on or before March 15 by every person and resident who had an income for 1919 amounting to $1,000 or over.

Hathaway wins game from Elton

The Hathaway basket ball girls motored to Elton Tuesday afternoon and defeated the Elton girls in a very fast game by the score of 25-18.

This is Hathaway's third consecutive victory, having won from Jennings 18-13, then Lacassine 25-6. Half of the Lacassine game was played with Edna Bucklin, star forward, on the side line.

We think the Hathaway girls are to be congratulated for their victories over these larger schools, especially since the majority of the girls are playing their first year on varsity squad.

Rev. Leavitt speaks to Koasata Indians

Rev. FW. Leavitt, minister of the Congregational church, left early Saturday morning with W.J. Savage for Kinder where he spoke to the Koasata Indians the same evening.

There are 125 adults, all of which belong to the Congregational church. They have their own minister, Rev. Paul Leaders. They also have their own building where they hold their regular services.

Less horses on farms in Jeff Davis

Tractors and other farm machinery replaced over 400 horses between the federal census taking of 1930 and 1940, a statistical review of the 1940 census revealed today.

There were 1,402 horses and mules on Jeff Davis farms when the 1940 count was taken compared to 1,447 when the 1930 count was made, the survey shows.

WELSH DEPARTMENT NEWS

F.A. Arceneaux has purchased a half interest in the Star and Crescent saloon, making the firm of Arceneaux & Fontenote.

Born Dec. 30, 1893, to Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Kimball, twin daughters. This is a welcome addition to the family of seven boys, judging by the countenance of the happy father.

E.M. Powers has sold his farm beyond Hawkeye ranch, on which Mr. Arwood lives. We have not learned the buyer's name, but understand that it is a gentleman from the north.

CIVIC LEAGUE REQUESTS YOU TO KEEP CLEAN

Here it is, the request from the Sanitary Committee Civic League asking everyone to clean up and keep clean. Not only does this need to be done to remove the offense to sight and smell, but to safeguard against fire, to match, a cigar stub carelessly thrown into the jungles on some of the vacant lots might cause a disastrous fire, costing many times what the cleaning of said lots would be.

Disarmament of suspicion, mistrust, greed, jealousy, hatred and the superiority complex are as vital to world peace as disarmament of guns, bombs and poison gas. The first will have to come before the latter can be made complete.

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get through life without paying either alimony or pin money.

The brain is composed of three parts, but some people don't have all cylinders working at once.

"Pay-Your-Bills Week" seems to come too often for some people.
