Lafayette man fears rabies may result from horse bite

Last Saturday morning, Philibert Hernandez, son of Mr. Chas. Hernandez of the eighth ward, was attacked and slightly wounded on the arm by his favorite horse. The animal had been stabled and young Hernandez was preparing to exercise him, when without warning the horse seized his master by the right arm and tore off the sleeve, causing a slight abrasion of the skin.

Although the wound is so slight, the strong symptoms of rabies which soon developed led young Hernandez to kill the horse and consult medical advice.

Announcement of the special rates, on account of the Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, were made Friday through local agent H.L. Davis at the S.P.

$5.59 is the round trip rate from Jennings to New Orleans. Dates of sale of tickets are Jan. 27th to Feb. 3 and for train scheduled to arrive in N.O. before midnight of Feb. 4. Final return limit to reach original starting point is prior to midnight of Feb. 14th, 1913.

Parish fair called off for Army

At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Jeff Davis Parish Fair Association held Saturday, Sept. 13, it was decided to call off the 1941 parish fair. This action was taken due to the Army maneuvers in this territory which necessitates the use of the fair grounds and to the late opening of the schools.

In two weeks, a couple from Boulder, Colo., will tie the knot in a different sort of way.

Iota native Louis Cart and Linda Keydash will exchange vows at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, during the Tee Mamou-Iota Mardi Gras Folklife Festival.

The bride will wear an old-style dress with Mardi Gras decor and the groom will be dressed in a Tee-Mamou Mardi Gras costume.

The couple will arrive at the stage in downtown Iota on an ox cart while Les Frere Michot Band of Lafayette will play Cajun French music.

Grooming rules for students are issued

The Jeff Davis Parish School Board has modified, but only slightly, its ban on long hair for male students attending classes this fall.

In its annual listing of what will be considered proper dress and grooming for students in grades 6-12, the board issued a statement on boys' hair which said, "Students' hair must be clean, neatly groomed, not bizarre or worn to call undue attention to the wearer, nor worn conspicuously to symbolize extreme attitudes"

Masquerade Ball was delightful event

To the strains of music rendered by a string band from Lafayette, over half a hundred couples "tripped the light fantastic toe" in the W.OW. hall last night from 8 oclock until after the midnight hour — the occasion being the initial masquerade ball of the 1913 Mardi Gras season, and it proved a most delightful event, a real treat to the many young ladies and gentlemen who participated in the pleasures of the evening.

The ball was given under the auspices of Meneau Tribe No 24 Improved Order of Red Men.

Women of the Klan entertain

On Friday night the women of the Klan were hostesses to an information Washington party given to a number of friends and out-of-town visitors. A capacity crowd was present to enjoy the pleasant hours.

The lodge rooms were artistically and appropriately decorated with souvenirs of Washington, flags and flowers.

The following program was rendered: Selections by Buch's Orchestra Recitation and Song by George and Martha Washington E.O. Himler performed "The Old Rugged Cross" with Irma Williams and Ursa Hunter.

Seessell Ann and Cammilla Johnson, the two talented little daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney K. Johnson, former residents of Jennings, known to many people here and related to several Jennings families, will be seen in the big feature picture "Sparrows" with Mary Pickford in the leading role next Wednesday and Thursday nights.
