The time-worn phrase, "Bigger and better than ever" as applied to fairs, shows and other attractions, may be overworked, but that's still the best description of the fast-approaching Jeff Davis Parish Fair, according to Mrs. Rosebud Moses, whose every spare moment is being devoted to the success of the big fall exposition.

Young ladies to vie for pageant crowns

Beauty queens to pig pens, talent shows to beef judging and parades to exhibit booths depict the wide and varied interests stirred annually by the Jeff Davis Parish Fair.

And 1977 will be no different.

Kicking off with the annual L'il Miss and Junior Miss pageants here Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Jennings High School Auditorium, the gala week will continue through Saturday when it all ends with the Jeff Davis Approved Horse Show.

Rodeos to be featured at parish fair

Rodeos with some of the best riders in the state as well as local riders will be featured at the coming Jeff Davis parish fair on Wednesday night, October 31, Friday afternoon, November 1 and Saturday night, November 2, J.C. Barman, Secretary of the Fair Association, said today.

The rodeos will be put on by L.G. Rasberry of Mowata who features rodeos at his farm at Millerville. His rodeo will be expanded by outside talent, stocks and clown acts to be put on by the fair association.

Marcantel Recognized at Prairie Supper

Friends of the Welsh Museum packed the Community Center Thursday evening for the annual Louisiana Prairie Supper. During the event, longtime supporter and U.S. Army veteran Paul Marcantel was presented with a handmade quilt created by Dolores Walker Derouen.

Feds crack Medicare gene test fraud that peddled cheek swabs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal agents took down an alleged Medicare fraud scheme Friday that exploited seniors’ curiosity about genetic medicine by enticing them to get their cheeks swabbed for unneeded DNA tests. Medicare was billed about $2 billion.

Dubbed “Operation Double Helix,” the crackdown targeted telemarketing companies, doctors and labs, in a joint effort by the FBI, U.S. attorneys’ offices, and the Health and Human Services inspector general. More than 30 people were charged around the country.

FIRST FAIR STAGED IN JENNINGS DEPOT

Staging a fair in a town of 150 population, with no meeting place other than the waiting room of a small railway depot — and making it a howling success is credited to E.R. Shankland and his loyal aides, who put on the first fair in Southwest Louisiana at Jennings in the year 1885. On August 8th, to be exact, according to records in the possession of Mrs. Laura Remage.

FREE SHOW ON MIDWAY

A man-and-wife high wire act, featuring the Weingards, is being offered free to the public in the midway of the Jefferson Davis Parish Fair, it is announced.

Performances are being given daily at 4 and 10 p.m.

Other special attractions this year are the Monkey Speedway and a large snake show, a representative of Buff Hottie Shows, concessionaire, said today.

Expanded program to include Pierce, dancing

The rapidly expanding program for the Jeff Davis parish fair and oil exposition here Wednesday through Saturday of next week will include an address by Commissioner of Agriculture Dave Pierce at 10 a.m. Friday at the fair grounds.

T.E. Owens, manager of the annual fall festival, stated that in addition, the Amelia Egan Hildebrand School of Dancing will present an hour's program from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, immediately proceeding the selection of the queen.
