LSU-Florida to kick off in primetime on Oct. 12

BATON ROUGE – LSU’s game against Florida on Saturday, October 12 will be played in prime time with a 7 p.m. kickoff, the Southeastern Conference announced on Monday.

The game will be televised on ESPN. The Florida game will also serve as LSU’s Homecoming and will include the on-field recognition of 2019 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Johnny Robinson, who is also serving as LSU’s SEC Legend this year.

The LSU-Florida contest next week will be the first time the teams have met on ESPN in prime time since 2015 when the Tigers posted a 35-28 victory in Tiger Stadium.

FIRST FAIR STAGED IN JENNINGS DEPOT

Staging a fair in a town of 150 population, with no meeting place other than the waiting room of a small railway depot — and making it a howling success is credited to E.R. Shankland and his loyal aides, who put on the first fair in Southwest Louisiana at Jennings in the year 1885. On August 8th, to be exact, according to records in the possession of Mrs. Laura Remage.

FREE SHOW ON MIDWAY

A man-and-wife high wire act, featuring the Weingards, is being offered free to the public in the midway of the Jefferson Davis Parish Fair, it is announced.

Performances are being given daily at 4 and 10 p.m.

Other special attractions this year are the Monkey Speedway and a large snake show, a representative of Buff Hottie Shows, concessionaire, said today.

Governor’s debate focuses on policy differences

LAFAYETTE (AP) — In a policy-focused second TV debate, Gov. John Bel Edwards and his Republican challengers Thursday drew starkly different pictures of Louisiana’s economic and fiscal health, taking some new digs at each other in their final clash ahead of early voting.

The Deep South’s only Democratic governor described a Louisiana rebounding from an economic recession and a decade of budget crises, with fewer people uninsured and new state investments in education, though he avoided describing the taxes used to stabilize state finances.

Bear-roping plans nixed

When Jennings planned a bear-roping event as part of its Parish Fair in the 1930’s, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stepped in and said that they had no objection to the roping of “cow brutes and horses” but the roping of a bear, in their view, was both inhumane and unnecessary.

Expanded program to include Pierce, dancing

The rapidly expanding program for the Jeff Davis parish fair and oil exposition here Wednesday through Saturday of next week will include an address by Commissioner of Agriculture Dave Pierce at 10 a.m. Friday at the fair grounds.

T.E. Owens, manager of the annual fall festival, stated that in addition, the Amelia Egan Hildebrand School of Dancing will present an hour's program from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, immediately proceeding the selection of the queen.

Duo arrives for parade

"Don't be a dummy. Buckle up" Larry and Vince, the duo that made that phrase famous in television commercial spots, are in Jennings to promote driving awareness and safety belt use, said Jennings Fire Chief Tommy Deshotel.

"We've had an unusually large number of accidents in Jeff Davis Parish this year, with several injuries and fatalities because of the non-use of seat belts, so they are here to make people aware of the problem," said Deshotel.

Fifteen people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Marcantel Recognized at Prairie Supper

Friends of the Welsh Museum packed the Community Center Thursday evening for the annual Louisiana Prairie Supper. During the event, longtime supporter and U.S. Army veteran Paul Marcantel was presented with a handmade quilt created by Dolores Walker Derouen.
