LACASSINE - A traffic stop in Lacassine has led to the arrest of two occupants for possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

According to Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Ivey, on Monday, deputies patrolling an area known for drug trafficking in Lacassine observed a vehicle that failed to signal and come to a complete stop at two intersections.

The vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, was stopped on U.S. 90.

“During the stop deputies discovered marijuana and suspected methamphetamine in the vehicle,”

Ivey said.

WELSH - A Baton Rouge man is currently in custody after police in Welsh caught him in the act of attempting to burglarize a home.

Monday evening, Welsh Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence on South Adams Street in reference to a subject trying to break into the home.

After speaking with the occupant of the residence, the officers canvassed the area and located Jamall Derouen, 39, of Baton Rouge near the back of the home.

Volunteers are coming together to raise money to assist another community member. Dexter Cormier recently suffered a massive stroke and has been receiving medical care at a hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. A benefit has been planned for Saturday, Oct. 19, with an 11 a.m. start time at the American Legion Post.

“We are in need of monetary donations in order to transport Dexter back home,” said organizer Towana King. “So far his bills are over $20,000 and he will still require at least one more surgery and ongoing therapy will be necessary.”
