Groups to host Buddy Basketball

A brand new activity for children with exceptionalities will begin in the month of October. After a successful Incrediball season, the Johnnie Rose Foundation and the Friend 2 Friend Organization have came up with yet another way to keep these special children entertained.

“We will now host Buddy Basketball,” said organizer Dr. Scott Blanchard. “We had such a great interest in the softball tournaments we decided to expand this year.”

Three basketball games will take place. All games will be held at the First Baptist Church gymnasium, located at 1001 N. Cary Ave.

Governor’s debate focuses on policy differences

LAFAYETTE (AP) — In a policy-focused second TV debate, Gov. John Bel Edwards and his Republican challengers Thursday drew starkly different pictures of Louisiana’s economic and fiscal health, taking some new digs at each other in their final clash ahead of early voting.

The Deep South’s only Democratic governor described a Louisiana rebounding from an economic recession and a decade of budget crises, with fewer people uninsured and new state investments in education, though he avoided describing the taxes used to stabilize state finances.

Welsh Elementary fifth graders Lauren Hayes, Santadrian Kelly and Hollie Guillory led the Welsh Rotarians in saying the Pledge of Allegiance for the club’s Sept. 19 meeting. Standing behind them is club president Pat Deshotel. The guest speaker for the meeting was Maddy Landry with the Southwest Louisiana Independence Center (SLIC). The goal of SLIC is to assist and advocate for senior adults and individuals with disabilities in living positive, productive, independent lives within the community.

Young ladies to vie for pageant crowns

Beauty queens to pig pens, talent shows to beef judging and parades to exhibit booths depict the wide and varied interests stirred annually by the Jeff Davis Parish Fair.

And 1977 will be no different.

Kicking off with the annual L'il Miss and Junior Miss pageants here Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Jennings High School Auditorium, the gala week will continue through Saturday when it all ends with the Jeff Davis Approved Horse Show.

Lake Arthur High School begins its homecoming festivities by choosing a collection of girls worthy of representing the school and their classes. The 2019 Homecoming Court Maids were voted on by the student body. These remarkable young ladies will represent their classes during all homecoming festivities within the town during the past few weeks.This week’s Homecoming Maid Spotlight is on the five 2019 senior maids.

Twelve girls representing six Jefferson Davis Parish high schools will be vying for the title of 2019 Jefferson Davis Parish Fair Queen. The annual pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Jefferson Davis Parish Fairgrounds.

According to Queen Chairman Brandy LaBouve, these young ladies competing for the title of Jeff Davis Parish Fair Queen are juniors and seniors at their respective high schools. These contestants were selected either by the student body or through a local school pageant.
