Respectful and safe tagging is being tolerated during homecoming week under limited circumstances. Police Chief Danny Semmes says no other form of vandalism will be tolerated including paint, eggs, paintball guns, chemicals and any items other than toilet paper.

This weekend is the last chance to see the hilarious production by A Block Off Broadway Community Theater of “Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will?” Performances will take place at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29. WELSH – The Old Time Rice Threshing Festival provides the community with the chance to take a step back in time with an interactive history lesson on how rice was harvested in the early 1900s.

The event demonstrates how rice was harvested many years ago before combines and modern technology. Antique equipment is used to demonstrate the threshing process for attendees.

The rice is first cut with a McCormick-Deering binder pulled by an antique tractor, tying it into small bundles. These bundles are then picked up and stacked into much larger bundles called shocks.

Fugitive arrested for stolen firearm

A fugitive is currently in custody after sheriff’s deputies were called out to Grand Marais Road on complaints that he was carrying a stick and armed with multiple weapons.

According to Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Ivey, deputies received a call of a suspicious person walking on the roadway. The witness stated they thought he might be carrying a stick and was armed with a knife and a firearm.

The suspect was identified as Brannon Malik Deshotel, 24, of Jennings.

Too often, players beg off from their starting assignment role and cite discomfort, tenderness, stiffness or other vague reasons not to play that night’s game. The average annual salary of today’s player is $4.3 million, and the average player age is 29.

La. ‘rainy day’ fund balance considered low

LOUISIANA SPOTLIGHT

Because of a projected $500 million surplus, Louisiana’s savings account for troubled financial times will receive a sizable $125 million bump in its deposits. But the “rainy day” fund still will remain below its peak after years of depletion to fill budget gaps.

While other states have focused on rebuilding their reserves since the last recession, Louisiana spent those years careening from one self-created budget crisis to the next, until Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and the majority-Republican Legislature reached a sevenyear tax deal in 2018.

JDP early voting opens Saturday

Early voting for the Oct. 12 Gubernatorial Primary Election kicks off this Saturday, Sept. 28, and runs through Saturday, Oct. 5.

Jeff Davis voters can cast their votes daily at the Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters (ROV) office from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Saturday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Oct. 5, with the exception of Sunday, Sept. 29.

PJ to address rezoning, rate hike requests

WELSH - A public hearing will be held today on a zoning classification request from agricultural to industrial.

The Jeff Davis Police Jury will hear a request to rezone property for a proposed dirt pit in Welsh. The property is located on Connie Lane. The bar pit will be used for the excavation of dirt and clay, according to the request and would need to be rezoned from A-1 to I-2 for heavy industrial use.

The hearing will be held at 5 p.m. today at the police jury annex located in the Sidney E. Briscoe Building located at 304 North State Street in Jennings.
