One of BB King’s ‘Lucille’ guitars sold for $280K

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A guitar given to B.B. King for his 80th birthday has sold for $280,000 at an auction of items from the blues legend’s estate.

Julien’s Auctions says King often used the black Gibson ES-345 prototype that was one of several guitars he called “Lucille.” A spokeswoman for the auction house, Mozell Miley-Bailey, said Monday that the buyer wants to remain anonymous.

Gubernatorial candidates tangle ahead of early voting

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Just days before the start of early voting, Gov. John Bel Edwards’ Republican opponents struck at his hallmark achievements Monday in hopes of keeping the Democratic incumbent from outright victory in an election less than three weeks away.

The Deep South’s only Democratic governor continued to defend his record and suggested that U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham and businessman Eddie Rispone were trying to divide Louisiana residents into the partisan lines of Washington as they seek to force him into a runoff from the Oct. 12 election.

Puerto Rico braces for flooding, landslides from Karen

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Karen began drenching the U.S. Virgin Islands on Tuesday while bearing down on an earthquake-shaken Puerto Rico still scarred by a hurricane two years ago.

U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said the storm had already caused mudslides in the territory and major power outages were reported early Tuesday, though he said the cause was not yet clear.

“Don’t take the storm lightly,” Bryan said. “It will start to throw massive rain.”

LSU is No. 6 in magazine rankings

BATON ROUGE – LSU is No. 6 in the 2019 Collegiate Baseball magazine recruiting ranking released on Monday, marking the Tigers’ second Top 10 finish this month. LSU was No. 7 in the Baseball America recruiting poll that was released on September 5.

LSU has finished in the Top 10 of a recruiting survey 12 times in the past 13 years. The Tigers have finished No. 1 in a recruiting ranking in 2007, 2010, 2014 and 2018; No. 3 in 2009; No. 4 in 2012; No. 5 in 2017; No. 6 in 2019; No. 7 in 2011, 2015 and 2016; and No. 10 in 2013.

WELSH - The Welsh Greyhounds could easily be a card-carrying member of District 4-3A, as they will face their third opponent from that district this week. The 6-2A Greyhounds have already faced South Beauregard in jamboree action and then last week squared off against Iowa. This week the Hounds will welcome the St. Louis Saints into town for another non-district clash.

ELTON – The Elton Indians will welcome in a familiar foe for Homecoming festivities this week, as the East Beauregard Trojans make their way to Cleve Beard Stadium Friday night. The two teams have had many fierce battles over the years, trading blows and wins ever since they were district mates up until two seasons ago. After a quick hiatus in 2A, the Trojans once again find themselves in district 4-1A and bring their vaunted double-wing offense over to Indian Country Friday night.

Trump ordered aid frozen; more Dems want impeachment

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump personally ordered his staff to freeze nearly $400 million in aid to Ukraine a few days before a phone call in which he pressured the Eastern European nation’s leader to investigate the family of political rival Joe Biden, a revelation that comes as more Democrats move toward impeachment proceedings.

Trump, in remarks to reporters at the United Nations on Tuesday, said he held up the aid to fight corruption and urge European nations to share in helping out Ukraine.

Fire threat brings power cuts to thousands in California

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Thousands of people in Northern California woke up Tuesday without electricity after Pacific Gas & Electric cut power to try to prevent wildfires amid windy, dry and hot conditions.

PG&E cut electrical service to 24,000 customers in three counties in the Sierra Nevada foothills Monday evening, saying power will remain off until weather conditions improve.

The utility said it may restore service briefly on Tuesday before it cuts it Tuesday night.

As police, firefighter numbers fall, officials urge prep

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — With natural disasters increasing in frequency and intensity, first responders are finding it more difficult to reach and rescue the thousands of victims of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires.

Throughout the country, many emergency units have fewer people to navigate disaster response, meaning they have to do more with less.
